Scrap Metal Needs Your Help!

Scrap metal may not be glamorous, but it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry.

If we actually recycled ‘ALL’ old phones instead of chucking them into the dustbin, our recycling percentage would go through the roof! We would be a better world if we stretch our efforts to ‘recycle properly’ instead of throwing the recycle items in the general trash. Cities should be more proactive, having disposable locations for say batteries -instead of driving a long distance to dispose of batteries. Other cost effective measures: For instance, the bin could send out a signal when this bin reaches a certain level of ‘fullness’. This way the driver does not have to come at a scheduled time to check the bin for dumping. A lot more of these ‘easy to access’ processes should be adopted by more cities. I need to see more bins!

Elegant Recycle Bins

The Bad NEWS
“Recycling Rates of Metals: A Status Report,” says that recycling rates of metals are in many cases is discouragingly low. The report issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) states that fewer than one-third of 60 metals studied have an end-of-life recycling rate above 50 percent and 34 elements have a recycling rate of less than one percent. Many of these metals, however, are crucial to clean technologies such as batteries for hybrid cars to the magnets in wind turbines, according to the authors of the study. provided by rick Leblanc of thebalancesmb.com Feb/2018

IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON
In Southern Ontario, I have seen a lot of bins overflowing. Coffee shops have recycle bins outside that are overflowing more times than I care to think. Is it up to me to call the city or the business and complain. Sometimes, it comes down to one person to do the right thing. Our ex-Mayor Hazel McCallion made notes where pot holes were peppered throughout the city of Mississauga. After she retired, a lot more potholes were left un-noticed. Yes it sometimes does take one person. Why not you?

PLAYGROUND MINIONS

More Recycled Scrap Tire Minions

MORE MINIONS
It was reported that 600 million dollars was spent on marketing Minions in 2015 alone. Their appeal is universal because they have no one language. You will often hear ‘gelato’ and ‘banana’. I hear a little Spanish in there. Typical ‘Minionism‘ words are repeated throughout their movies. But, there is no language that we know about. This way, we  watch very carefully what the message is–maybe that’s the secret. Lovable – yes! Slapstick humor – yes! You can compare the minions to the Keystone Kops in silent movies. We didn’t know what they were saying in either. There were no subtitles for -the- Keystone Kops. How about a ‘minion’ bedroom!

Spring Tire Planters

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
Spring is only a few days away. Are you thinking about what’s trending in outdoor planting? Maybe your own organic potatoes? Are you excited?
Take a trip to your local scrap yard. Call first, to make sure they have tires.  Have them put aside 2-3 tires for you to pick up. Get some soil/compost  from your garden nursery  while you are out. Now, what to plant? Lets talk about marigolds. They are a natural repellent for flying bugs. If you plant peppers parsley or other flowers, add a marigold to your mix. What else to plant? We have just celebrated St. Patrick’s day. What else do we think about that is Irish? Potatoes! That starchy spud kept generations of Irish well fed.
WHY PLANT MARIGOLDS?
Annual Marigolds can be used anywhere to deter Mexican bean beetles, squash bugs, thrips, tomato horn worms, and white flies. They are also known to repel harmful root knot nematodes (soil dwelling microscopic white worms) that attack tomatoes, potatoes, roses, and strawberries. You may want to plant a few marigolds in your tomato bed.
I wanted to show you this tractor tire planter. See the marigolds on the edges of the tire. For a planter this size, you would really need a truck to haul your tractor tire to your yard.  It so big you could use it as a mini pool for your small kids.

There is a renewed interest in recycling old tires . Painting tires in luminescent colours, stencils, custom designs  is another fun project for this spring. Wrapping the tire in jute is popular for a different texture. Single tires or more layers; the possibilities are endless! These flower planters have been stacked. What else would you need stacked tires? The answer is planting potatoes.

POTATO PLANTERS

Stacked tires are used in growing your potatoes. Three’s the charm. It really works!
Instructions
1) Make sure you have bedrock under the planter. This is not always possible. I would put broken pots, ceramic and stones in the bottom tire. The depth is up to you. The more the merrier. Put a bit of soil on top of the stones of the first, bottom layer. Add the next tire and follow these instructions.

2) Choose a sunny spot in your yard, garden or on a patio or balcony.
3) Stack two tires , The first layer  with stones for drainage, with about 2-3 inches of soil. The second layer is fill with earth and compost.
4) Place 4 or 5 seed potatoes  (watch video) in the second layer, about 2 inches deep, with the eyes or shoots facing up. It doesn’t have to be completely full because potatoes grow upward. (see diagram)
5) Cover with a couple of inches of soil and make sure to water. Keep the soil damp.

There are other ways to grow potatoes. I have to share this one with you!
When to grow potatoes—> planting almenac
TRASH BAG POTATOES!
This is really wild. It makes you want to go out and plant your very own trash bag potatoes. Love it!

To watch over your potatoes you need a minion! This is Jeff, the potato planting minion!
If you have small kids, you can show them the value of food. They can help. Talk about organic potatoes. Plant one marigold–please–in each pot. Plant some potatoes this year and have fun watching them grow!

Find your keys in Snow!

LOST CAR KEYS….FOUND!
Dropped your keys? Where did they go? (a) buried in the snow (b) dark, underground parking (c) somewhere in the house -or- outside the house – in your driveway. How about your freezer? Yes, I left my car keys inside our big old chest freezer. That’s what happens when you are bringing your groceries in the house from your car on a hot summer day.  Normally, I hang up my keys on the hook in the kitchen as soon as I get in the house, So I wont lose them!  It must have been one of those famous  ‘Distraction Days’. As I was bringing the frozen food in from the car straight to the freezer I went. It happened to be that my car keys were still in my hand. Kerplunk! I closed the big heavy freezer door . That’s where my key decided to go too. I scoured the house, the car, my clothes. I looked absolutely everywhere, except the basement where the freezer was humming peacefully. Thank goodness for my second set of keys. I thought about getting another copy.  Later that day, I opened the freezer and to my surprise, there were the keys. Right on top of the frozen peas!
TECHNOLOGY has the answer–> A key finder. A combo phone app and a key fob.  Once you activate the app on your phone simply by tapping with your finger , the key fob gives you a ring tone to pin point its location. All key trackers are not alike. Read the reviews, if you are shopping around. The small flat battery used in the Chipolo lasts about 6-9 months with standard replacement batteries. I have the Chipolo. You can buy as many fobs as you like it. The Chipolo rings your misplaced phone (even if it’s on silent mode) by shaking Chipolo.  It works for keys, dog collar, wallets, luggage or ……? It has a 200ft (60 meter) range. If you left your keys in a bar, the Chipolo beeps as soon as you go out of range. Not bad. Test it out by putting your keys in the freezer and see what happens.

Chipolo Fob: $25-$35 Battery 6-9 mon-to-1 yr.

Custom Names on your Chipolo Chip

MAGNET Technology: We go far back in science to the power of the magnet. Get yourself a horseshoe magnet and place it in the glove compartment ( note: keep the safety steel bar on the bottom of the magnet to preserve the strength). The magnet key finder works especially well in deep snow. You can glide the magnet over the snow and find your keys that way. It really works. I have used it. Did your keys fall under the car? Magnet power is here to stay. It will grab those keys for you. In this case, the size of your magnet is what really counts. Also, Magnets are lucky. They are a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Keep that “horse shoe” magnet in you car simply for good luck! They bring the owner wealth. As kids, we thought magnets were magical! It’s a handy tool for picking up nails dropped in awkward places. And yes..good to find lost keys in the snow!

Holiday Scrap Metal Art

We could not let the holiday go by without showing you these great artists who are welding, gluing, twisting and using plasma laser to create beautiful holiday fun art. For this wreath you need a metal cutter, an exacto-knife, glue, a foam ring for your craft store and lots of patience. The loops are one inch wide. Get directions at craftsncoffee.com. You could try using a stapler. Not sure if it would work. But, it might.

Dr. Pepper Soda Wreath

After you opened the door, and walked inside, take a look at the Christmas tree.  Lots of fun  decorations made from tin can lids for Christmas balls, bells and snowmen. Garlands of cranberries and popcorn adorn the tree. Oranges with cloves pinned to the rind smell terrific.  Look at this fork! Amazing ~really fantastic. A simple fork  + a talented artist = equals = beautiful art work ~ tree decoration!!

Santa Tree Ornament (ITS A FORK!)

Next, we have to be re-purposed some old tires and built a Christmas tree outside the local store or gas station. Green paint is a must. You can add any decorations you have handy. Even add lights.  Options: Use silver or gold paint on the tires and build a modern Christmas tree. This green tree looks warm and cozy. White lights will give it a brilliant sparkle at night.

ONE OF A KIND CHRISTMAS TREE
This abstract or should I say eclectic Christmas tree was built by the residents at the South Pole in Antarctica; from nick-nacks found in their storage room. Supplies for this region consist of the bare necessities. Having a pine tree would not work. The needles would probably freeze and break off. Although, they may have fake pine trees inside their homes. Even the fake trees would not survive outside. The highest temperature is -12F. Their lows average about -70F.

Low Scrap Prices – Who’s To Blame?

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?
We felt the sting in February 2017 with a scrap metal price drop. In October, scrap prices dropped yet again. China’s improved plants and abundant labour force presents itself as very strong competitor in the global market.

Import Taxes

The U.S has already made headway as they are changing the import tax structure to encourage companies to buy U.S. steel and as always the tag-a-long local scrap metal. With higher duty on imports, buying local steel will become more attractive.  The anti-dumping laws slip away as countries like China takes advantage of loopholes to bypass such scrutinies. China is known for their cheap labour. A fact of life. Govt loans and new, modern scrap metal processing plants in China are bolstering their economy.

Carbon steel output for the automobile industry (in China) reaches 800,000 tons in the first six months of this year as domestic demand soars, particularly for new energy vehicles or NEV’s published by chinadaily.com

There is no stopping China’s steel manufacturing and scrap metal processing.

A worker at a waste recycling center. The global downturn affected scrap dealers in China, with weak consumption demand and falling raw material prices. courtesy of chinadaily.com

India is a big buyer of scrap metal. They are also becoming independent in the scrap metal industry. The Indian government try to reduce the purchase of China’s cheaper scrap metal and are encouraging Indians to buy the higher priced local scrap metal to boost their own economy.

Recycling lead from scrap car batteries

CHANCE OF A QUICK TURNAROUND
Scrap metal prices have reached a pretty low ebb. Lower scrap metal prices started to come to the forefront in 2015 and continuing to keep a low profile up to February 2017. From this point, we will begin to slowly improve over the months ahead. In March and April, scrap metal prices went up a smidgen by about $5-$10 a ton. Local prices may vary. It depends on your own local area. Prices are not consistent across the board.

Philadelphia’s Results Mimic The Rest Of The Country

This past October was a disappointment. Another drop of $10-$30/ton. We fell backwards. Recovery takes about 12-18 months to  see meaningful changes. There is no formula except to look at growth or decline in various countries. China is a great force. They have the man power.  The lack of unions and good allocation of resources is a benefit. Their growth has been 400% in some months.  Countries are trying to maintain an even playing field in the global market. It is hard when China has most of the cards.  If it takes roughly 14 months for prices to fall, it stand to reason that it might take 14 months to recover.  It is always good to remember that each supplier (of scrap metal) has a selling point. When their yards fill up, they need to sell to stay in business no matter what price  is set for that day.

12 Days of Christmas-Scrap Car Way

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT!
December 25 launches the first day of the “12” days of Christmas. 12 days later on Jan.5th, it ends. January 6th is the feast of the Epiphany. The official end of continued Christmas celebrations. Back in the middle ages; 1558 to 1829, it was a crime to be a Catholic. Back then, if you were caught writing anything down that would indicate the Catholic faith, you would be hanged, imprisoned or drawn and quartered. The 12 days of Christmas is a song with a –hidden meaning—for example:…10. The ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments.  The Twelve Days of Christmas was a message from the Catholics in France and adopted by the British Isles.

Scrap Yard Beginnings

RECYCLING OLD CARS ~ A GROWING BUSINESS

Model T Ford Truck 1923

When your Model T broke down, you left it at the side of the road as soon as it stopped working. Basically, you would push it off the road and simply leave it there. Everybody did it. Not that long ago (up to early 60’s),  you still found old vehicles abandoned in fields and permanently parked on Any Street in Europe and the rest of the continents.  Sometimes, a car may be reported abandoned, A tow truck would find its way to that rust bucket and swoop it away. It was not unusual to see a broken down car left outside busy city streets for months on end. Shoppers and store owners would pass by the vehicles without a second thought. Day by day, you might see parts of the car missing. Especially, if the car remained idle and exposed for a long time. I have seen pictures of cars with birch trees growing inside the cars, right through the floorboards.

Kids Playing On Abandoned Cars

You could not get away with that today. The vehicle would get towed by the city and you would pay the fines at the pound. Generally speaking, people contact a licensed scrap yard or wreckers they find from the Internet. The wreckers will come to your house or shop and tow your vehicle to the scrap yard. People sometimes will leave their car in the driveway for a couple of years until they decide that it’s not worth keeping any longer. Perhaps, they need to hang on to the memories associated with their old car. Or, just too lazy!
IN THE BEGINNING
As soon as appliances and useful items were being manufactured they eventually broke down. You threw them out and bought another  stove or a new set of pots. The junk man would roam the streets collecting junk and bring them to his humble junkyard and make a small living at it.

Sanford And Son: This Is The Big One!

If you were looking for an old radio and could not buy a new one, you would visit the junk yard to see if he had a beat up old radio that still worked.  Junk yards stored old refrigerators, irons, cabinets and anything that was left out on the road or that they could salvage. With old cars, the junk man would tow it into his yard and sell parts to fix other cars. They sometimes sold the old beaters to mechanics who fixed up the cars to become roadworthy again. We have grown to a full recycling business. As fast as the cars run off the assembly line, another assembly line is created. Cars and trucks roll over the scales, get crushed, cubed and ready to make new cars bicycles an other steel products. Whatever you buy, you can be sure that 25% of it was made from recycled steel.

MODEL T 1930-1940

According to the old timers, it was hard to find a farm without several T’s out back in the 30’s and late 40’s. A model T was worth $10-$15 and sometimes as high as $20. These cars were slow compared to the newer models. After a while, farmers would load up the vehicles to the trains to be deposited at the nearest scrap yard.

Detroit Model T’s Ready For The Scrapyard

SCRAP CAR BUSINESS TODAY
Scrap yards are found at the perimeter of most cities since big fields are needed to house the cars. Next, the cars are dissembled by removing the tires, gas tank and batteries. Oils and antifreeze are drained from the vehicle and it is ready for the crusher.Trucking these sardine cans to the processing plant where they are bundles onto cubes or melted into bars, coils and rods of “new” recycled steel.

Scrap Cars: The End Of The Road

After that , they are shipped all over the world or trucked to nearby plants for processing into valuable useful products like a new refrigerators, new car or steel grids. Remember that 25% – 30% of this new steel are reincarnated into brand news cars.

New Tesla Electric Truck!

LAUNCHING NOVEMBER 2017

Tesla will unveil its electric semi truck on November 16, the company confirmed today via email invites sent to press. The invites feature a full-size off-center image of the Tesla truck, still mostly clad in shadow, besides those iconic headlights we’ve seen in earlier teaser material. published in techcrunch.com

Tesla Electric Truck Nov. 2017

HOW GOOD IS IT?
You know it was coming at some point. Tesla’s truck is said to have between 200 and 300 miles of range per charge according to a previous report, which would require a significant battery capacity to achieve given the towing capacity of the truck category that Tesla is targeting. Good for short Hauls or port to port runs. Price of gasoline has starting to rise to $1.18 per gallon in Mississauga. Ontario, Canada. Electric vehicles are getting a stronger grip in our communities.
You will be able to see this new Tesla truck if you are passing by Hawthorne, near Los Angeles, California on November 16th.

JOLLY GREEN GIANT SIZE BATTERY
We spotted this Tesla proto type out in California. You can see the size of that battery. You’d think they would have solar panels on the top of the cab to charge the battery. Yes they do have -optional- solar panels on top of the cab! These trucks are built from scratch. No adaptation of gasoline driven trucks. Inside is a large screen panel with all the bells and whistles.

Battery for Electric Semi-Truck

The engineers a Tesla did not jump the shark. An electric pick-up truck has already been tested and road worthy. What comes after T as in model T..yes its “U”. The Tesla Model U (as in Utility) is available for Eco-friendly driving. I’m not sure if they will find a different name for it. Personally, I Like the model U.

Published by Truck Trend Edward A. Sanchez Aug 2016

The truck will also have a solar roof and optional solar tonneau panel for trickle charging when parked. Now you have an empty trunk in the front where the engine used to be.  Reminds you of the VW beetle?  This new storage area is called a frunk short for front trunk. Fancy additions are a frig and electrical outlets. You can power up right from your truck to run tools or plug-in an outdoor lamp. Talking about lights. The truck sends off a perimeter of light if you are working in the dark or dropped something in the ground in a dark area. Lets take a closer look at this frunk shall we?

Frunk: Center Panel Refrigerator. Ready For A Cold One?

PRICE: $60,000 $80,000 and $100,000. Remember, a comparable Mercedes will run up to $200,000. Mercedes has its electric car line too. It was reported that  360,000 pre-orders were waiting in anticipation for their own Tesla truck.
