Scrap Metal Prices – April 2019

LATEST NEWS
Metal Miner and other publications are reporting on the talks between China and the United States. Copper is in great demand since The East has a handle on scrap metal imports and exports. The reason why China  is very interested in copper is because of what copper means. Technology, phones and circuit boards use copper. And, you can imagine the demand. Copper price is up by 3%. That was the same forecast as in February, 2019. No real change for March and looks like April will be the same.

I couldn’t get recent stats on world-wide scrap metals (for Feb/March 2019). There is some speculation based on projected demand. Looks like business as usual. No great fluxes in the market. Looking at the countries that are manufacturing steel, you can guess where recycled steel manufacturers are busy unless they export the scrap metal to processing plants outside their country. Trade prices dictate where they will go.

Steel is one of the most common metal alloys we still have today. Steel is so widely used in our society. Car manufacturing is high on the list, followed by shipbuilding. Construction demands a lot of steel since we are continually building and not slowing down. Where there is steel, there is steel residue (prompt steel) and of course scrap metal builds up. Old structures and old ships do not last forever. The good news is that this used steel can be reused while maintaining its original strength. The same goes for copper roofing, old pipes and all kinds of finished products that have over stayed their welcome through rust, natural disasters and man-made disasters.

Imports, exports and tariffs. The most important news today involves China. And will be the focus of scrap metal and all metal news for several years to come. One reason is that China has a great volume of  ‘human’ resources that are willing to work at any job to stay alive. Our society can not compete with this aspect of China’s industry. China was always strong.  We just didn’t write about it in the western world. Remember Marco Polo, who opened the trade trails between the East and West. Marco came from a family of merchants; traders.  China is rich in resources and keeping their society viable and very much competitive. I will be reporting the results of these new talks and other changes That have a bearing on scrap metal pricing.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE CHINESE NEW YEAR!

New Moon Feb 5, 2019

1) The Chinese New year is also known as the Festival of Spring called chunjie (春节). The Chinese year is  based on the Lunar year not our calendar year. It is more accurate for weather phases.
2) FULL MOON: The first “new moon” after Jan, 15th and not after Feb 20th is when the celebrations start for Spring Festival and for the next 15 days until just ‘before’ the full moon appears in the sky (Feb 19, 2019). This celebration defines the end of cold days and the beginning of spring’s bountiful gifts of flowers and gardens full of vegetables and rice fields. It is a time to honor their ancestors and ask for a prosperous year.  In this ‘lunar’ year of 2019, the full moon lands on Feb.5th.2019.

3) PRAYER: It is a time of prayer. Praying to gods and  ancestors to provide a good year of harvest.

4) A monster named Nian (年): Every new year the monster appears. Nian was challenged by a brave boy who used firecrackers to fend off the beast. 
5)Fireworks, burning fake money and gold paper on the eve and on “New Year’s day” are offerings of respect for the ancestors and brings fortune and good luck to their ancestors in the afterlife.
6) Fireworks Ban: Beijing bans fireworks. This ban was lifted in 2007.  But, it is back on. The angry public can not agree with something that was started in 1400. The government was trying to curtail air pollution. Their fireworks display lasts for 3 days or several weeks. A sound compromise would have been better.

7) LONGEST Festival: The Spring Festival is technically 15 days. But celebrations start on New Year’s Eve (making it 16 days). You can also say that the holiday season starts in (lunar) December with the Laba Festival (腊八节—là bā jié). That’s around 40 days of celebrations!
8) Family Reunion: If you want to buy a train ticket to visit with family, you need to purchase it 60 days in advance. The Chinese call it a migration. I suppose it is true. Relatives will get together for the duration of the festival. Some businesses will close down completely. So consider your purchases at that time of year. They may be slow to get filled.
9) TABOOS : On New Year’s day there is no taking showers, no throwing out garbage. On the other hand, there’s a day before the Spring Festival dedicated to cleaning. This day is to sweep the bad luck away and make room for the good. There is a list of taboos. No arguing,swearing using words like death and sickness. No hair-cutting and so on.
10) Lucky money: and the lucky festival color is  “red”.  Red packets or pockets is filled with money. This money is supposed to help transfer fortune from the elders to the kids. Red packets are exchanged between friends, family members, bosses and employees. This ceremony is adopted on Feng Shui rituals all years round..

Everything is decorated in red. RED is a symbol for protection and fortune. You might wear red clothing. Many people will wear red underwear every day of the year. Others add-on red shirts, pants, jewelry, insoles and more!

Dumplings along with traditional desserts like tangyuan ( referring to family union), rice cakes and sponge cakes are traditional food during this time, along with wine and proper toasting ceremonies.

CHINESE NEW YEAR is celebrated around the world. Did you know that one out of every 5 people on the planet are Chinese.  The Chinese New Year ends with the Lantern Festival. It is really beautiful! this yearm you will be able to witness and participate in this event on February 18th, 2019. (just before the full moon-Feb19th)).

Scrap Car Winter Season

The Big Chill

TODAY IS A CHILLY ONE! I am up at at’em starting at 4:00 am. Hot water starts boiling, then the coffee is brewing up.  I warm up my hands on a hot cup of coffee as I ponder the day’s bookings. I look out the window to check the temperature on my outdoor thermometer. It is still screwed on the bricks outside my window for these past 45 years. Standing up to all kinds of weather. First, I look at the still and bleak sky against the old oak tree’s naked, black branches. The outdoor thermometer reads minus 5C (23F). The weatherman predicts a high of -1C. Woopee! I glance at the truck and see a new layer of snow on the roof of truck. It’s time to go. The last thing I do before I go out the door is put on my hard hat. It’s a red baseball cap, that is designed to take a hit. If you’re not careful, those rusty old cars can break your day. Anything can happen as you may well guess.

Some customers think we only work in the summer. Drivers do like those dry roads and warm sunny days. I’m one of those die-hard workers that make it every day. Me and my boys work year round. Friends ask how I manage every day. What I like the most is that I never know what the day will bring. It’s the name of the game. One of my driver’s says that he simply likes jumping in the truck and getting out on the road. You have to be an outdoors person. Before I did residential cars I used to be a boat broker. I mostly worked between Florida and Canada.  Sometimes, on a slow day, I clean up the yard or go ice fishing, just to get away. Then, other days, we are running back to back with calls and cars. Some people don’t know is that we also pick up small trucks. They weigh as much as a van and are easily towed.
WINTER SCRAP YARD
Can you imagine these model t’s all lined up at the scrap yard. The shredders did not exist until 1950. ‘Sledgehammer’ is what comes to mind. Mind you scrap guys would keep car ornaments, clocks and more. Parts were welcome to those who needed them. It was a different world then. We still use cars for parts. but not as much anymore. Scrap yards that save parts are dwindling away. Too many cars out there is the reason for that. I don’t store parts. It costs too much to save them due to the cost of storage.

Winter Car Tips 2019

MAKE LIFE A LITTLE BIT EASIER!
In Canada and if you are living in the northern U.S. States and the mountains of Colorado, you will feel the bitter cold of father winter. Here are a few tips to make your winter a little bit easier
FIVE TOP WINTER CAR TIPS
1. Frozen car lock. Yes at -20 below zero, you may have trouble. Have antifreeze inside the house or a dollar store bottle in your bag. Dip your key in the anti-freeze and voila: your car key will fit in the car door!
2. If you are using a lot of antifreeze. her is a recipe to make your own (DIY) recipe.

3. Lost Car Keys: Did you drop your car keys in the snow? Dredge your magnet in the snow and..see the effects of the law of attraction. Keys found! Are you in a dark parking lot and dropped your keys. And, on top of that  – no light? Get your magnet out and  find your keys.

4. Wiper blades: Yesterday as the snow was blowing, I saw a few cars with their wiper blades standing upright. It is a great idea. If your wipers are frozen especially when you are on your way to work in the morning, the alternative is to turn your car heater on and wait for the ice to melt. Ugh! then, you say to yourself there must be an easier way, and certainly there is a good solution.

5. Car Maintenance: Check your tire pressure, quality wiper blades, winter tires, full gas tank, and your fluids are primed up. This is good advice for all year car care….ladies and gentlemen!

Finally, SLOW DOWN AND PLAN AHEAD… every time I drive in inclement weather, I always see someone speeding down the highway like they stole the car. About 15 minutes later, I pass by the same car. This time speedy Gonsalas is at a dead stop on the side of the road. the best advise is that if you can put off your ‘drive’ then do so. Change some appointments that are not critical to your life.

It works with just about any car built after 1996, and it’s super easy to use.  Basically, the app (on your phone) shows  why the “Check engine light” is on. Also, Fixd even turns off your check engine light after you ran the diagnostics. Fixd™ also gives you oil change and maintenance reminders – so caring for your car has never been easier!  It tells you the cost and labour time needed to repair or maintain your car. Oil changes, tire rotation and other maintenance features are addressed for your vehicle after 10,000 miles, etc.

On-board diagnostics (OBD) scanner. The OBD is an automotive term referring to a vehicle’s self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems car diagnostics reviews many products. There are a few out there to buy.  You don’t know if some reviews are by the manufacturer or an impartial study. Mechanics do run ‘ electronic’ diagnostics to check your vehicle for needed repairs. Now, the consumer has a crack at it.

 

HISTORY OF OBD’S
We’ve come a long way since the first consumer car diagnostics was manufactured in 1980. The Fixd device/app was included in the top 19 items to buy in 2019.  It was worth repeating here today. In 1980, a smaller, hand-held version of the car diagnostics was developed to turn your engine light off before your car was inspected. You did not get details about what was wrong with the car. –to get your plates renewed that year.  No one said it out loud. But, it was certainly a diversion. Scrap Metal Prices This Winter (2018-19)

RECYCLING PRICES DEPENDS ON CHINA
Mills are holding off from buying scrap metal right now. They are waiting on China’s steel market, to see how it develops. China will determine the course of action for most countries.
Buyers are waiting for better market clarity resulting in a drop in the demand for scrap metal. Turkey is also in a “wait and see” situation. Prices will tend to drop slightly due to inactivity. This should be temporary. Prices are picking up!

UPWARD MOVEMENT
Some upward momentum is in scrap prices are  building up. India’s demand is propelling an upward climb. Demand is starting to look good this week.

Big orders are scheduled for February and April in 2019 supports this theory. It looks like the first quarter in 2018 is going to be strong.

LONG TERM OUTLOOK
The next 3 years will be looking good for the scrap metal industry. An upward climb of 25% – 30% is predicted. A few dips along the way is expected. All in all it looks very positive. The scrap metal industry is growing. This is evident with large recycling plants being  built throughout the world. We are looking at three-month uptrend this December after several months of declines.

Historically, prices tend to drift lower during the beginning of Q4 and then rise. Last year, HRC domestic prices started to increase in December, then skyrocketed during the first quarter of 2018. Who are these cute creatures? – We just like them!

There everywhere, they’re everywhere. Bigger than the Gremlins. Theses furry creatures were fun and popular. Enough to make Gremlins 2. But they lost the interest of the audience. No gremlins 3. The gremlins may have been too one-dimensional. The Minions have one leg up on the Gremlins. They talk! Yes, gibberish, but you can actually understand them. Go figure? For adult they are fascinating. Their story line and antics are fascination. Sort of like the Keystone Kops! Who?I really don’t know why. Once the climb out of their hovels. we were smitten. Jokes, Stuffed toys and ‘Minion” designer bedrooms. It is a never-ending story. The Minions will be back and who know how long that will last. Rambo lasted 7 years. Sly Stallone really got too old. or the series fizzled out. How many jungle can you fight through? Story line had to be something spectacular to pull it off once more. I have a feeling the minions can go on forever? Now , tell me, are the Keystone Kops like the Minions. You be the judge.

Scrap tires have come a long way. They are shredded into bales of rubber to provide break walls in communities in case of floods. There aer so many old tires that an areal shot of deserts in northern Africa reveal piles of tire dumps. I’m not sure what is going to happen to those tires. The never seem to break down. Plants have emerged to deal with the over abundance of tires. There is a process where tires are used to manufacture oil. This diagram spells it out for us.
