Is this the first time you have scrapped your vehicle? We are going to visit Joe Smyth. He is wondering what to do. Joe needs to get rid of his old, broken down Ford Ranger. We are going to try to answer some questions that are bothering Joe about what to do with his old truck. Perhaps you will get some insight or new information when you are ready to scrap your car, van or truck.
Customer Joe, “When it came to saying goodbye to my defunct 15 year-old Ford Ranger, lying abandoned with a dead battery outside my house, I realized I had no idea how to actually get rid of a vehicle. Could I (1)sell it? (2)Scrap it? (3)Give it away?”
Every day 1,000 cars are scrapped in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The Canadian government has strict environmental rules on how cars should be disposed in their “retire your ride” program. It was launched in 2009 and ended in 2011. Today, ‘Retire Your Ride’ program is privately run as a scrap car business.
What is the best way to get rid of your old car? Where can you obtain the best price? And how can you be sure the buyer isn’t some “faker” who will take your car and drive it around when you are still liable for potential speeding tickets and fines?
SELLING YOUR CAR/ADVERTISING
Autotrader.ca is probably the best place to start. Kijiji.ca also has cars for sale. If your car is still running, check the Kelly “Blue Book” online. They give suggested selling prices for your vehicle.
“As is” cars are good to advertise online for a low price. Be honest with the buyer. Let them know what repairs are needed. Other resources are the classifieds in the Mississauga News and the Brampton Guardian. Any classifieds are typical places to find used cars. Lots of other local URL’s in your city would work too.
Kijiji.ca is very popular to advertise just about anything. The advantage here is that advertising is free. Although Kijiji will encourage you to pay for premium services. Clearly, the site has lots of old heaps for sale. Customer Joe tried Kijiji. He eagerly advertised his 2002 Ford Ranger. After 3 weeks, Joe failed to sell his truck. Joe ended up calling a scrap yard to haul it away. This does not mean it will happen to you.
Trading in your old car when buying a new one is discouraged as bad value by many motor-heads ~ experts ~ in the car business. Back in April Joe bought a new car, and at that point thought it might be useful to keep the Ranger as a second vehicle, given it was still insured for a few months. But those months slip away, and Joe realized he should have removed the vehicle sooner than later.
SCRAPPING YOUR CAR
The days of tow truck drivers trawling around finding abandoned old cars are over. Today, we type in “scrap my car” in the Internet and up comes dozens of companies that promise to collect your car within days – and pay you as well.
How reliable are these companies on the ‘Net’? Which sites should you trust? Joe wanted to know what happens to the old cars and trucks. Some scrap yards resell the vehicle, or sell it abroad. Vehicle scrap rules introduced in 2009 make it a legal requirement that any car sent to be scrapped must go to an ‘Authorized Recycling Facility’ only. All scrap yards for cars must have a license Canadian Auto Recyclers’ Environment code don’t harm the environment. This means all the battery acid, antifreeze, transmission oils, etc. are properly removed and recycled appropriately.
What happens next? Dig out your ownership document and give the signed half to the driver. He will then give you the agreed upon cash exchange. You are no longer responsible for the car. The scrap dealer sends the ownership paper to the Canadian Government. It is stamped SCRAP CAR right on the document. The end of the trail. In Canada, scrap car dealers provide cash for the scrap cars. In Britain cash is frowned upon.
Remember to claw back any insurance you have on the vehicle. You can reclaim any unused complete months ~ if your car is scrapped~. A few weeks ago, I was helping a customer with their rebate. She gave me a 5 star review on google ‘My Business’ maps. I was simply happy to be able to assist the customer by getting 2 months back from her car insurance; a savings of $86.
GIVING IT AWAY
There are a number of organizations that will take your ‘retired ride’ and donate the money to charity. The leading one in Canada is the Diabetes Association and the Kidney Foundation . The government rebate program has lost its appeal. The Canadian Gov’t has shifted their attention and resources to rebate programs, supporting electric cars and hybrid electric/gas vehicles.
Commodities Market: People don’t always realize that scrap car prices fluctuate as the demand for scrap metal changes. Scrap prices go up and down. In 2008 you would get $50 for your car that you fetch about $250 today. The scrap market in 2017 has had one significant drop in September, followed by another drop in October, 2017. People call for a quote last week or 2 weeks ago convinced that they will get the same price when they call back. Recently, the price has dropped about $20 – $30 a ton and they are angry with you. When you explain it is a commodities market, they are not convinced and react badly. You may get a bad review on Google “My Business”, which we did. With no censorship or filters in place on the Internet, its a fools paradise.
