My Favorite “Scrappy” Cat!

There are so many artists that twist scrap metal in to works of art. Everyone has a favorite. Sometimes it is hard to decide if you have a favorite “Scrappy” piece f art. I thought very carefully and I think this Scrappy Cat is probably my favorite piece. I always smile when I see it. And, sometimes look for it.

I like the scrawny version of this stick cat. Bewildered and a bit frightened. It reminds me of me. Below is the “Sleepy” cat. Kind of looks like Garfield’s cousin. They are both adorable.

adorable cat

What about real kitty cats? They move around, play and need to be fed with love and tins of tuna. Cats do love fish!!!! I recently found out that even dogs like to eat fish. Especially if you have a sick dog. Fish works.

Everyone has or likes a favorite cat, dog or pet iguana. You may have once had a pet that keeps your fond memories intact. I must admit there are those that do not like any kind of animals. Me, I’m especially fond of cats. I like dogs too. I grew up with kittens in our family. It’s just nice to have one in the house. Not so lonely when your cat (or dog) is there with you.

A Kid’s Tire Park

We have gone far beyond the tire swing.Let’s see what parks are doing now to conserve the environment.

Cheerful Bright coloured Tires

Its all up to your imagination. Safe, fun, ‘re-purposed’ tires.the possibilities are endless. Some teeter totter’s use two half tires.  the seated portion is made smaller.

The tire teeter totters might be for daycare or private backyard only

How about a car. This one’s not going anywhere. But, it’s a bit of fun.

Car Power

What about a game of  Tic-tac-toe? You can use neon paint. They don’t have to be bugs. How about fruit with funny faces? Or maybe funny faces.

Tic Tac Toe Game

For this game, the opposing side can be blue or green faces. Whatever your heart desires.

Scrap Tires-Out of Control

SCRAP TIRE GRAVEYARD: North Africa, we see satellite pictures of acres of desert land covered with acres of old tires. Imagine all the useful items to be made from old tires. The possibilities are vast. I’m guessing the tire piles – all got away from them.

Visible: An aerial image shows the vast amount of used tyres that are put in the ground – the patches are even visible from space

If they try burning the tires, the fires burn black, billowy smoke for months not to say how the environment is being polluted. Old tires can be made into floor tiles, roofing and so much more.

A sea of rubber: In Kuwait City’s Sulaibiya area every year gigantic holes are dug out in the sandy earth and filled with old tyres – there are now over seven million in the ground.

DIY Car Detailing

While the winter blahs are almost behind us, start thinking about the best way to clean your car. There are so many great ideas for keeping your car clean using simple tricks and techniques. Let’s get started with silly putty. Press it into grooves of your car to get that stubborn dirt out.
How brilliant is that?

Cleaning your headlights with toothpaste is genius! In this second video,  you will see the tennis ball parking tip again. But there are as few more ideas that are valuable.

A Feng Shui car cleaning tip is to put course salt on the car floor mats in your back seat area. It absorbs odors. Vacuum it up a few weeks later. Hang something blue or a symbol of water on the rear view mirror. It symbolizes a good flow of energy. Feng Shui maintains that your car should be clean at all times to encourage good energy and vitality for you and your passengers.

High Performance Additives: gas and oil cleaners

ADDITIVES: GAS AND OIL

Liquid Gold: Injection Cleaner

Gas additives clean out your gas tank. The same applies to your oil reserve. Good oil and gas go a long way in keeping your engine purring like a kitten. You really do not need gas or oil additives for new cars. When your car warranty has expired you might want to use some additive every 2-3 months. Perhaps every 6 months, if you don’t drive a lot. Some schools of thought discourage additives. Oil additive will have added detergents and basically the same oil that is already in the car. The oil coats the detergent as it flows into your car. How much of this elixir do you need? One oil additive chemist has proven improvements using an additive. Now, all additives are not alike. So buyer beware. Get ‘good’ expert advice.

Oil Additive at Work

FILL HER UP! In your gas tank, you will always have residue that has settled to the bottom from impure gas. If you are driving too close to empty, you car starts to pick up sediment. The ‘BAD’ gas is not good for your car’s engine.

FIX THAT LEAK! This is a great segue (segway) into car leaks. Be it oil, brake fluid or other leaks. This video helps you identify the leak and what is needed to fix the leak. Exceptionally well done video! A must…to view! Here are some great ideas from fixcarleaks.org.

Some gas station will have a leak in their reserve tank and need to replace it, The ground sediment is seeping into the cracked reservoir. How do you know this? You car is sputtering as you drive just after a fill up at the gas station.  An old car like my Chevy Caprice will let you know. I noticed right away that my car was running somewhat rough and sluggish. The flags went up. I had just filled up at the XXX gas station.  I stopped buying gas there, even though I passed by their pumps every morning. I suspect they do periodic inspections of the gas station’s reservoir. None to soon for that place.  10 months later, a construction crew was replacing the reservoir tank at that location. I was wondering when they would wise up. If I said anything, I knew they would blame my car. That’s how it goes.

A Classic Old Gas Station

You should always have a minimum of 1/2 tank of gas. It’s a good rule to follow. You are picking up the dregs or sediment found in your gas, causing your car to choke and sputter when riding on  a 1/4 tank of gas or less.  Some old gas tanks may develop rust from the salted roads and frankly old cars in general will spurt at the seams. Holes and leaks start appearing over time. With older cars, look for ‘liquid’ spots on you driveway. It could be an oil leak, gas leak or even transmission fluid leak. A pinkish colour will be your transmission fluid leaking.

Spend 5 minutes and watch this video on how to Diagnose your LEAKS. It’s very good!  www.autoblog.com It will save you $$$.

TIME TO BUY A NEW CAR

Transmission: Stops Slip

TRANSMISSION Fluid does not have to be changed often. Some people say the transmission will fail at around 140,0000 miles. Rebuilding a tranny costs $3,000 – $5,000. Transmissions are designed to operate at high temperatures, but consistent overheating can break down the fluid. City driving especially increases wear and tear on your car. My dad would say that when the transmission fluid overheats ‘a lot’, it was the beginning of the end”. He would buy a new car without a second thought. Transmission over heating is one of the worst things to happen to your car.

Re-Purposed Scrap Metal

Inner Tube Hammock

Recycle to Re-purpose
We started with recycling in the 80’s. It was replaced by “up”cycling. Now another catch phrase has replace the recycling world. “Re-purposing” has taken the lead. What next? Smart-shoes (recycled rubber sandals). Smart floors for shredded rubber tiles in the kitchen, bathroom, den and outdoors. We do have smart cars. But, the recycled metal in all cars (25%-30%) is never talked about. I can’t imagine what they will be calling used material-transformed into useful products in the next 10 years.
RE-PURPOSED ARTISTS
If I twist, turn and burn metals into sculptures, would I be called a re-purposed artist. Perhaps its true. Taking a look at it, all artists are re-purposed artist.

Kevin Caron Studios, Arizona.

Michael Angelo carved a clump of marble into a statue. Was he re-purposing big stones? The term re-purposing is really used for something we manufactured or made and used it “again” to make something else. A marble statue would never be “re-purposed”. It would only be turned into rubble or small stones.  One thing nice is that marble does last the test of time. Cars will disintegrate (rust), get crushed or broken down in traffic accidents. They have to be recycled. It is their journey. Take a tour at Kevin’s workshop. In this video, you will see the starting of a caterpillar on his work table.. See the finished project below.

Caterpillars Are Fun To See Around The House.
It all begins at the scrap yard. Kevin goes shopping at the local scrap yard, where he gets his metal for small and large art projects.

This 5 ‘ high outdoor, powder-coated metal sculpture wiggles when you touch it. I noticed the different shades of purple from the reflection of light. It was very vibrant! this is my favorite of Kevin’s work. After looking at this piece, I had to see what else Kevin was wielding from scrap metal. A very talented artist. Kevin Caron’s Outdoor Sculpture
Where does he get his ideas and the metal pieces?  It all comes from his local scrap yard. The metal that is.  Some people who know Kevin Caron,  may drop off scrap metal at his workshop. He creates abstract art or cute sculptures. all shapes and sizes. What it truly comes down to is — if you enjoy making these twisted works of art, then you have found your place in the world!

CAR TIPS and TRICKS

Unless you have a chauffeur driving you from point A to point B, you need to stay alert while driving your car. And, you need to look after your car.
When you take a moment to think about it, some of our major decisions center around our vehicles.

Not My Chauffeur

When the price of oil is up, we tend to cut back on our travel or seek to consolidate trips as much as possible.  Also, we are being encouraged by the government’s mandate to car manufacturer’s to reduce CO2 emissions and go electric. We need to look after our gas guzzling cars better. My motor head friends are always checking the level of oil and the filters on my car. Bosch is a good name for reliable filters. You can always check your owner’s manual to find out what filters you need and what type of oil is required for your car. The thickness of the oil is important too.

Check Your Oil?

Cold winters and hot summers determines your oil type. Always check with a mechanic. Advice is free. Some mechanics know more than others. You may have to ask several people. Or, if you are in luck like myself, you know a mechanic that fixes racing cars and is a plethora of information.

TIP#1: This is your most important number one tip. Make sure you change your oil regularly. Today, people are not doing it as much. Remember those pit stops where you drive your car in for an oil change. They are gone and replaced by a drive through car wash (more money). We need a reminder about how important an oil change means to a car. You should CHECK all your fluids regularly! Make sure your transmission fluid is not cloudy.
TIP#2: You need to check your tires before heading out. Take a quick look at both sides of your car before your get in your car. My neighbor did his own roof and a nail landed in my driveway. Flat tire in the morning. Do not drive through areas where they are building new homes, paving roads or any type of construction…a flat tire may ensue.   Check tires before taking a long trip.  Check the air pressure of your tires and top up the air when you go to fill up for gas ( monthly). There is summer and winter air pressure recommendations. Ask your mechanic. Bonus: Proper air in your tires saves gas!

Store Your Tire Gauge in the Glove Compartment : For Easy Access

TIP#3: Make sure you use your turn signal. I see so many people not using their signal before they change lanes or make a turn. Worst case is when some people leave their signal on..flashing down the street. It is so annoying. ( I have done it myself. B-O-O-O-O-O) That’s added stress on the driver. Note to self: You can’t hear the signal clicking if the radio is on too loud.

TIPS#4 Check for blind spots before changing lanes. Vans are have the biggest blind spots. I learned the hard way.  And yes, when it comes to your side view mirrors, objects are closer than they appear.

TIP#5: Winter windshield wipers. Stick your wipers in the air when you park your car for a long time. If freezing rain/snow is being pelted down on your car overnight, you will be glad you followed these simple rules. Its saves you from buying new wipers. (recommended by wiper manufacturers)

Lifting Wipers Does Not Damage The Springs On Your Wipers.

BONUS TIP
Tip#6: Change your car’s FILTER : air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and HEPA cabin filter. Get a friend or your mechanic to check your filters of they are covered with soot or not. It is the best advice for car owners. What kind of filter is in your car? Look in your owner’s manual. It will tell you the type of filter needed for your vehicle. You can also go online, enter your car make and model on this website and see what filters you need–>Find out at http://www.championparts.ca/Products/Car-Filters/Cabin-Air-Filters.html  (If you don’t have an owners manual, order it from the dealership or online). SPARK PLUGS: Getting new spark plugs is a debatable issue. Follow your good judgement. Age and usage of your car is a factor in your decision. I would rather err on the side of prevention.

RADIATOR FLUID TIP

Keep your Radiator Clean

When you check your radiator container don’t add water…take the extra time and use the 50/50 mixture.

The container will have places on it to indicate whether your fluid levels are low or high. Remove the reserve tank cap and fill with radiator fluid. If the reserve is empty, also add fluid to the radiator. Radiator fluid should be used in a 50/50 mixture with mineral free water. This mixture protects water in the cooling system from freezing, raises the boiling point of the water and aids in preventing rust buildup. If you regularly find the radiator fluid levels low, then you might have a leak.published by autos.com

You can clean your own radiator with a garden hose. Instructions are on the autos.com website. (www.autos.com).

LEAKING Radiator

Al these methods of “PREVENTION” have a strong impact on your engine. Soot and foreign grainy stuff that is in your oil and gas change the performance of your vehicle. We will be talking about oil and gas additives with advice form a NASCAR mechanic on the next blog.
