DIESELgate Scandal

Today, a truck driver may spend an average of $70,000 per year on fuel alone. That’s diesel fuel.
“Volkswagen, which was at the center of the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal that exposed diesel engines as not being as clean as some automakers led regulators to believe, is now suggesting a phase-out of the huge diesel subsidies”

CEO Matthias Müller / Volkswagon

The future is electric. The people at Volkswagon are moving their interests to electric cars.

“I’ve become convinced that we should question the sense and purpose of the diesel subsidies. If the switch to environmentally friendly e-cars is to succeed, diesel combustion engines can’t continue to be subsidized the way they have been forever.” published by electrek.ca

Tesla Sales are Predicted to Boom in the Next Quarter

Tesla Model 3 2018

With Tesla’s new electric Semi’s, they are predicting about 50 cents a mile to drive the large transport e-trucks. Alternate vehicles such as electric cars and hybrid electric cars will become more in demand when people buy more electric cars. They may not drop in price. But, operating cost will offset high gas prices. Europe is moving their eye towards electric cars more and more. They are going so far as to give compensation for diesel run vehicles as  trade-ins when purchasing electric vehicles. Or, simply drop offs to get them off the road.
BAN OF DIESEL/GASOLINE -DRIVEN CARS
Volkswagen CEO Matthias Müller added that the proposal for concentrating on electric cars would be a solution to avoid a ban on diesel and petrol vehicles. Several European countries are now considering banning all diesel and petrol fueled cars in the upcoming decades. Norway, France, England, India, Germany, China, Scotland and California, U.S.A. are all on board.

CALIFORNIA WILL BAN SALES OF GASOLINE VEHICLES IN 2040 IF UPCOMING BILL IS PASSED

Cities in California are so smog filled, partly due to the geographic location and population. The top 4-5 cities with the highest air pollution in the United States are found in California!

Light Rail Track And Pacific Ocean On The Background.

San Francisco: population 8,607,432. In the Bay Area, there are two main causes of poor air quality: ozone (for which it ranks 16th) and particulate matter. Ozone is a bigger problem in the summer, while wood smoke from wood stoves and fireplaces make air quality problematic in the winter.
No wonder California is so eager to promote electric cars.

The First Tow Truck

You have to find These old timers to get their stories about the wrecking business in the 1920’s. No Internet back then. Stories from the early days are hard to find. We really got excited when we found  Tony Wirka, who was in the towing business along with his dad.

Model T Tow Truck 1922

“We purchased it from his son at the auction,” said Skorohod. “His son is over 78 years old himself. We went to see him a couple of weeks ago and he gave us a little more of the story about it — a story that tells what towing was like in the old days when Tony Wirka was hired to do a job for the railroad.” published by oldcarsweekly.com

George Skorohod’s 1922 Model T Ford tow truck coughed to life with a “putt, putt-putt, putt-putt-putt” rhythm. It won a yellow ribbon for the most original vehicle at a car show. To drive the model T, you have to open up the choke and wrangle with three pedals. Old faithful rattles and sputters to the podium to receive the yellow ribbon. Unlike other old cars that are polished, painted (black) and restored with new parts, old faithful has clung to its rusty nuts and bolts for all these years. No wonder it won the people’s choice award out of 130 entries. You can see the old wooden planks have survived the test of time. The fellas said old faithful did a lot of work for the railroad. One time he had to move some cement blocks. Two burly men had to sit on the front fenders of this 1500 lb tow truck to keep it from lifting off the ground. The blocks were moved successfully.

Take a look at it ribbon on the front windshield.

Model T Tow Truck 1922

This beauty hails from Rescue, Nebraska. It was build in Nebraska and was very useful in Rescue. A one filling station and repair shop town. Wirka did all the car repairs for the town. No one has lived there for a long time. It has become one of those ghost towns people talk about. It’s new home is in Lincoln, Nebraska at Skorohod’s garage where he has several tow trucks. Old faithful is more a less a museum piece. Just to have it around is really fun to look at and imagine what it was like back in 1922.

Scrap Yard Beginnings

RECYCLING OLD CARS ~ A GROWING BUSINESS

Model T Ford Truck 1923

When your Model T broke down, you left it at the side of the road as soon as it stopped working. Basically, you would push it off the road and simply leave it there. Everybody did it. Not that long ago (up to early 60’s),  you still found old vehicles abandoned in fields and permanently parked on Any Street in Europe and the rest of the continents.  Sometimes, a car may be reported abandoned, A tow truck would find its way to that rust bucket and swoop it away. It was not unusual to see a broken down car left outside busy city streets for months on end. Shoppers and store owners would pass by the vehicles without a second thought. Day by day, you might see parts of the car missing. Especially, if the car remained idle and exposed for a long time. I have seen pictures of cars with birch trees growing inside the cars, right through the floorboards.

Kids Playing On Abandoned Cars

You could not get away with that today. The vehicle would get towed by the city and you would pay the fines at the pound. Generally speaking, people contact a licensed scrap yard or wreckers they find from the Internet. The wreckers will come to your house or shop and tow your vehicle to the scrap yard. People sometimes will leave their car in the driveway for a couple of years until they decide that it’s not worth keeping any longer. Perhaps, they need to hang on to the memories associated with their old car. Or, just too lazy!
IN THE BEGINNING
As soon as appliances and useful items were being manufactured they eventually broke down. You threw them out and bought another  stove or a new set of pots. The junk man would roam the streets collecting junk and bring them to his humble junkyard and make a small living at it.

Sanford And Son: This Is The Big One!

If you were looking for an old radio and could not buy a new one, you would visit the junk yard to see if he had a beat up old radio that still worked.  Junk yards stored old refrigerators, irons, cabinets and anything that was left out on the road or that they could salvage. With old cars, the junk man would tow it into his yard and sell parts to fix other cars. They sometimes sold the old beaters to mechanics who fixed up the cars to become roadworthy again. We have grown to a full recycling business. As fast as the cars run off the assembly line, another assembly line is created. Cars and trucks roll over the scales, get crushed, cubed and ready to make new cars bicycles an other steel products. Whatever you buy, you can be sure that 25% of it was made from recycled steel.

MODEL T 1930-1940

According to the old timers, it was hard to find a farm without several T’s out back in the 30’s and late 40’s. A model T was worth $10-$15 and sometimes as high as $20. These cars were slow compared to the newer models. After a while, farmers would load up the vehicles to the trains to be deposited at the nearest scrap yard.

Detroit Model T’s Ready For The Scrapyard

SCRAP CAR BUSINESS TODAY
Scrap yards are found at the perimeter of most cities since big fields are needed to house the cars. Next, the cars are dissembled by removing the tires, gas tank and batteries. Oils and antifreeze are drained from the vehicle and it is ready for the crusher.Trucking these sardine cans to the processing plant where they are bundles onto cubes or melted into bars, coils and rods of “new” recycled steel.

Scrap Cars: The End Of The Road

After that , they are shipped all over the world or trucked to nearby plants for processing into valuable useful products like a new refrigerators, new car or steel grids. Remember that 25% – 30% of this new steel are reincarnated into brand news cars.

I’ve Got A Woody

NEVER SAY DIE to a Model T
Ford’s Model T Woody’s are still kicking around. The wooden truck had its heyday was between 1917 to 1923. These pictures below are proof that the Woody is still strong and viable. I guess it’s a throwback from the horse-drawn wooden wagons that dominated the old west as the pioneers forged their way through make shift roads and trodden trails. The model T truck had the same chassis as the Model T car with solid rubber tires. In 1918 Ford’s assembly line produced 3 of these trucks. As demand grew…you know the rest. They grew in weight to about a  ton and sold for $399 around 1923. You’d be surprised how many are still around. This Huckster Wagon was sold for $22,000 in 2015 at an auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Billboards would advertise The MODEL T FORD !! The Car That changed the world !! You can paint it any color you want as long as it’s “BLACK”

To name a truck the “Express” pickup with a top speed of 20 miles an hour is a bit much considering that vehicles today will easily drive 100 miles of 60 kilometers an hour. (and more).  The  top speed for any Model T’s were about 20 miles an hour. That’s parade speed ladies and gentlemen. Back then, gas for your car was about 50 cents a gallon. One of R.C. Ayers’ coolest “toys” was the 1923 Ford Model T express truck that has been in the family about 30 years. Flat beds were around back in 1914. But, not quite like what you see today.

Ford Model T Express 1923

After the Clydesdale stopped delivering milk to your doorstep, the milk truck emerged. The original ‘Woody’ milk Truck was popular until a more efficient milk truck took its place. Now, we go to the grocery stores and pick up cartons or bags of milk. No more glass milk bottles with one inch of cream on top! …delivered to your door every morning.  The short-lived ‘woody’ milk truck reigned for a good 8-10 years. While they still linger on today.

Nostalgia At Its Best!

Judging by the way most of the Model T trucks from the era were treated, it’s a good bet Hansen’s toy was never babied like this in its first life. Ford began offering it’s TT line in 1917 with a one-ton chassis that was not much more than a heavy-duty version of its Model T automobile platform. The trucks rode on solid rubber tires and were propelled through a worm-driven rear axle connected to the 176.7-cid, L-head four-cylinder engine that was rated at 20 hp. The trucks had dual brakes, cowl lamps, front fenders and not much else. The 125-inch-wheelbase chassis carried a base price of $660 and turned out to be popular with the buying public — Ford wound up building a total of 135,002 of the new trucks. published by oldcarweekly.com

I had to share this picture with you. I could not believe my eyes! At 12-15 miles an hour…I hope he does not have to go far to unload the hay. Talk about heyday! Heyday has nothing to do with hay. It means the last hurrah(German Heida). Yes, definitely a ‘last’ for this farmer.

The Model TT(truck) was first sold in 1908. Although no verified hauling specifications are known, this one is pictured loaded with 8,000 pounds of hay. It was probably driving well below the Model Ts top speed of 40 mph.

HOLIDAY CHEER WITH SCRAP METAL ORNAMENTS
I thought I would give you advance notice for holiday decorations this year. It’s a good time to get started decking the halls and spreading the cheer. All you need are some wires, metal scraps, pliers or tools that bend and twist metal.
Last year, we brought you a coca cola Christmas tree. How about star ornaments for your tree.
FUN PROJECTS FOR YOUR KIDS
These coke stars can be single stars or attached together with craft beads or plastic thread. Add glitter for a brilliant star. You can use your own imagination and make your own fun design.

If you use clear glue on the back of the tin, sprinkle red glitter (or another colour you like). This way the ornament will have sparkle. To show you how the glitter sticks to metal, take a look at these mason jar lids. Another fun project for your kids. Easy to make. You can make your kids name using glue and add a different glitter colour to make your child’s name sparkle.

Rubber Soul

RE-NEW SCRAP TIRES

This is the best industry to reuse rubber tires. Take a look at the many benefits of shredded rubber. Custom made, long-lasting, recycled rubber soles. Get the perfect footing in life. your friends will commend you for your efforts. It’s very “IN” to own anything that is made from recycled material.

Rubber Soul/sole

These sandals have carpet remnants glued on the tire pad for extra comfort. Very luxurious sandals. Don’t you think?
Let’s get practical. Lots of bumpers, mats and safety items are made from recycled rubber.

Recycled Rubber Tires

From this thick slab of recycled rubber, you can get a spongy floor mat to absorb shock and for safety in factories. Costco employees stand on rubber mats. It is easier on the feet and safe. Recycled mats are used at home or in your kitchen. These mats are found at playgrounds, indoor sports or at the office. Interlocking tiles are practical and cost-effective. This carpeting lasts a very long time. They come in many gauges. Long, red carpets for the Oscars or at your retail store. Rubber mats prevent slipping on wet floors or captures dirt, rain or snow. These recycled carpets are rolled out in stores during the wet winter months. Brick shapes or various colours support a variety of uses.
RECYCLED RUBBER MATS
You need to see a few examples of how this recycled rubber is being used. It’s really amazing. Hexagon shapes and many other shapes have a sophisticated look on today’s floor coverings.

Electric Car Batteries

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BATTERY
LEAD BATTERY ~ UP-CYCLING
A recent study of lead batteries maintains the 80% of new ‘lead’ batteries are made from recycled batteries. It is an amazing and very efficient use of old, used batteries, especially car batteries that are being disposed of each time a car is brought into the scrap yard. Since the lead in batteries are recycled, it reduces the mining for lead. Batteries are important in back-up security systems as well as cars, airplanes and buses. This interesting video shows how batteries are being made.

Battery Council International (BCI), Chicago, and Essential Energy Everyday have released a showing lead batteries have a recycling rate of 99.3 percent, making them the No. 1 recycled consumer product in the U.S. published by recyclingtoday.com

Other Types of Batteries are Lithium and Nickel Batteries
All together there are 3 basic battery types. Lead batteries are popular with golf carts. Lead batteries are heavy and do not accelerate as well as the other batteries. A couple of different lithium-ion batteries – including LiFePO4, my new personal favorite. The life of a battery is important when selecting an electric car or a hybrid (electric/gas) vehicle. Today’s Lithium type battery can last 10-12 years. The Ni-cad battery is still being used while the Ni-MH battery has been shelved. Engineers may still develop better batteries or alternative energy sources. Talking about alternative energy sources, we can address solar energy for vehicles.

SOLAR ENERGY: Since solar energy is dependent on the sun, some countries may not fair well, especially those countries that remain dark longer during the day in winter months like Norway, Sweden and Finland along with northern Canada and Russia. Also, solar cars are still expensive vehicles. With a stretch of cloudy days for say 2 weeks and one or 2 days of sun may be problematic.
Price Tag of Electric Car Batteries
Replacement batteries run from $1000 to $6,000 per battery. It is important to remember that charging the battery is so low in cost that the savings are greater than gasoline or diesel fuel.
Toyota Prius uses an Li-ion rechargeable battery.

Electric Car Li-ion Battery

When Do You Recharge An Electric Car Battery?
The average electric vehicle can run for 40 to 200 miles on one charge. Toyota makes the RAV4 electric car, claims it travels for up to 125 miles per charge. To travel a distance of 200 miles or more, buyers will need to look at a more expensive electric vehicle, such as the Tesla Roadster.

What Kind of Batteries are used in a Tesla Electric car?
Tesla does not use lead batteries even tough other electric cars use lead type batteries. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are manufactured by Tesla, Inc. for their electric cars.

2018 ELECTRIC CAR
This sleek Jaguar 1 PACE SUV 2018 runs on a 90kWh lithium-ion battery. On one charge, the Jaguar 1 PACE SUV boasts of a 225-300 miles distance. Full recharge takes 90 minutes. Ford’s electric SUV will be unveiled in 2020. This jaguar is its first electric SUV.

Future electric cars may bring about longer lasting battery use on each recharge. More battery charging depots will appear when more people are buying electric vehicles. We see that batteries have been extended to trucks and more recently semi trucks.
