The rise of electric cars could leave us with a big battery waste problem

Electric battery-powered cars and trucks use a very heavy, lithium-type battery. Predictions of having all cars powered by electricity in 2040 and 2050 are good goals.

Electric Cars: Here They Come!

In reality, I think the change will be slower unless fuel prices will rise exorbitantly high. That may be the big push for electric car sales. Decreasing costs and longer battery ranges is a concern. Most importantly are the charging points. It’s not like gas stations, where they appear on almost every major intersection.

BMW is currently getting its electric vehicle batteries from Samsung SDI, but it has now signed a contract with CATL, China’s biggest battery manufacturer, to secure future electric vehicle production.

I believe what they numbers say, that there are 2.3 million charging stations in the planet. I just can’t tell you where they are located in my area ~the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). I know a few charging points in Mississauga. But, you will have a good drive to find them. It’s like waiting for a gas station when you drive through the desert route 66 in the States.
Most drivers recharge at home. They do have a tether. You can only go so far before a recharge is needed. Investigating charge points before you leave home is a necessity. One family that owns 2 electric cars. I asked if they had problems recharging. Jane told me when she ran out of power and was stuck in the middle of traffic. You really have to be on top of it.

FUTURE PROJECTIONS

One estimate for 2030 is looking at 140 million electric cars by 2030. It is based on the Paris climate deal. Another goal to avoid dangerous temperature rises. The number of electric cars in the world passed the 2 million mark last year [2017] and the International Energy Agency  (IEA) estimates there will be 140 million electric cars globally by 2030 if countries meet Paris climate agreement targets.

Car makers, recyclers and tech startups are working to solve the question of how to deal with lithium-ion batteries when they wear out.  A NEW MOMENTUM of the new breed of electric vehicles is taking place.  Polluting petrol and diesel cars will be gone at some point.  What about old, used batteries that no longer hold a charge?  What do you do with a half-tonne lithium-ion battery when it wears out? You will have to ask your dealer, where you purchase the hybrid/electric or EV car. They will provide information to you. Some dealers will take the old battery off your hands when you buy a new one. More questions. How long does an EV battery last? About 5-8 years. You need to know the guidelines for properly recharging the battery. It’s not like putting gas in your car where no thinking is required.

British and French governments last month committed to outlaw the sale of petrol- and diesel-powered cars by 2040, and car maker Volvo pledged to only sell electric or hybrid vehicles from 2019.

This electric vehicle boom could leave 11m tonnes of spent lithium-ion batteries in need of recycling between now and 2030, according to Ajay Kochhar, CEO of Canadian battery recycling startup Li-Cycle.

RECYCLING REALITY

As few as 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled. This has an environmental cost. The core ingredients of the  ‘electric’ battery is lithium and cobalt which are finite elements. Extraction from the EV battery  can lead to water pollution and depletion of other environmental consequences.

There are, however, grounds for optimism. Thus far, the poor rates of lithium-ion battery recycling can be explained by the fact that most are contained within consumer electronics, which commonly end up neglected in a drawer or chucked into landfill.
This won’t happen with electric vehicles, predicts Marc Grynberg, chief executive of Belgian battery and recycling giant Umicore. “Car producers will be accountable for the collection and recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries,” he says. Time will tell. Good intentions are often mislaid, by the wayside to dry up on the sidewalk on a hot summer day. I’m not a pessimist. ELVES of Ireland -Scrap Car News

IRISH ELVES of 2018. How it all started. ELV(End of Life Vehicles) Environmental Services (ELVES) is a new Irish compliance scheme to improve the recycling of scrap vehicles and to help encourage compliance with the End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Regulations. They were established in 2014 under the guise of CLG, representing the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in Ireland. They had been approved under the European Union (End-of-Life Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations 2016 by the new compliance scheme for the vehicle sector.

ELVES will promote, on behalf of its members, a network of public drop off points (also known as authorised treatment facilities, ATFs or scrap yards) that provide free ELV take back to the public.  ELVES’ mission is to improve the processing of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) in Ireland. In June and July, 2018 the ELVES have been promoting recycling at various fairs and public gatherings. Educating the public about the dangers of scraping electric car batteries was their May 2018 directive. I applaud Ireland for bringing to light  recycling old cars and being ambassadors for this worthy cause.

Through effective promotion, monitoring and data collection across its network, ELVES will encourage its members – vehicle manufacturers, importers and authorised treatment facilities – to meet their responsibilities.

ELVES aims to generate awareness of its national network of permitted scrap yards, officially known as Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs). Similar to recycling at a bring bank or civic amenity site, ATFs will enable people to easily hand over their vehicles for recycling and recovery.

WHY SHOULD WE RECYCLE?
It’s all about garbage! It was worse when there was no garbage collection. You don’t want to hear any of those stories. Maybe the wild west seemed glamorous. But, the garbage was not. Plagues began when sanitation was not an issue.  The first collective garbage collection started in the early 1900’s. Landfills came about around 1937. That is not that long ago.
HOW MUCH GARBAGE DO WE MAKE? Today, the average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. Americans make more than 200 million tons of garbage each year, enough to fill Busch Stadium from top to bottom twice a day. Twice a day!!!! that’s a lot of garbage.
Sweden is almost there. More than 99 per cent of all household waste is recycled in one way or another. This means that the country has gone through something of a recycling revolution in the last decade. What I find interesting is that the list of countries that recycle the most starts at Switzerland. Why is Sweden not even mentioned? I don’t get it. Be careful what you read.

Practical Upcycle Products

WE HAVE A LOT OF JUNK!
It seems like we are a mass of ants on this planet. Scurrying around and making a mess. Lots of junk. Old cars, plastic bottles. So much garbage. Who has the most garbage? Here is the pecking order (1) U.S. (2) Russian and at a distance (3 Japan, who sits at 25% of Russia’s waste. Don’t you think it’s by population? U.S. has about 325 million people while Russia’s count is 144 million. The numbers fit. However China has 1.379 billion of citizens. They are not even on the  ‘garbage’ list. Not sure why. China is such a secretive country about a lot of things. If t’s true, then China may be setting an example for the rest of us about recycling.  Once a week the garbage collector visits our house. Thinking back to the pioneer days. They did not have kleenex. I didn’t see any toilet paper in the outhouses either. Boots would last until they fell apart..for the last time. I could go on. Sweden has the right idea although the air gets the effects of pollution. They do burn garbage for fuel. It’s may be a bit hard to read the graph..but you can just image the numbers are growing higher.

the smoke does not go back into the air. My next blog will talk more about the negative effects. They even buy garbage from other countries. It’s insane if you think about it. Can we make anything good from this ‘old’ garbage? Remember one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. Lets’ see how much treasure we can get out of our garbage.
UPCYCLE FOR GOOD
1. USED OIL: Some people use the old oil from recycled cars to power their home “oil” furnace. These old furnaces are found in small towns and villages.
2. METAL ART: Art for homes, buildings and farm land.
3. OLD TIRES: Making roads, flood and hill barriers, flooring, even roofing.
4. NEW CARS: 25% of new metal production is made from recycled ‘old’ metal.
5. FURNITURE: Chairs, swings, hammocks and lots more. Here are some ideas you may not have thought about.

I like the ‘repurposed yogurt containers. My yogurt containers couldn’t fit a pair of sox..but kiddie sox works. I have to admit as much as I have good intentions I am not a big recycler. I do sort my garbage to the proper containers. I am going to make one project this summer where I will re-purpose something. I’ve got 6 weeks to think about it and JUST DO IT as Nike would say.

Scrap Car Prices For The Summer 2018

JULY SCRAP REPORT: Turkey is one of the biggest scrap metal importers in the world. Let’s see how they are tipping the scales in scrap metal imports.  The end of June and July are showing a slowdown for Scrap metal demand in Turkey; on of the largest scrap metal importers. Scrap prices are down. Although, it looks like Turkey is ready for an upswing in August of this year. Turkish steel producers are now resuming their deep-sea purchases of scrap metal for delivery in August, following their downturn in prices, from our sources on Tuesday July 10th. Do you know anything about Turkey? Here’s what you see when visiting Turkey….the tourist version!

Four deep-sea cargoes were heard traded on Tuesday, three of which were sold out of the United States, Metal Bulletin was told that a steel mill in the Izmir region booked an US cargo, comprising 32,000 tonnes of HMS 1&2 (80:20) at $348 per tonne, 7,000 tonnes of shredded at $358 per tonne and 3,000 tonnes of bonus at $363 per tonne cfr. Some sources believed that the cargo was sold late on July 6 but has only now been processed.

Tesla: Three’s The Charm

TESLA 3 PRODUCTION IS SOARING!
Haven’t we heard enough about the Tesla 3? No..not enough. The demand for this ‘affordable’ car is going through the roof. Tesla is trying to ramp up production from 5,000 a week to 6,000 a week. Some sooth-sayers say that Tesla can not even keep up with the 5,000 a week. This demand for electric cars is promoted by high gas prices. At $1.30 to $1.45 per liter –in Canada– is costly, and prices are not going down in the future. The U.S. sings the same tune.

With a $35,000 price tag instead of $78,000, we can all buy a Tesla. Elon Musk maintains that the quality of the new Model 3 has not compromised. I have seen a few Tesla’s on the road. It is a sleek-looking car in black with red accent lights. A very cool car.

The Tesla Model 3 is the first vehicle built on Tesla’s third-generation platform. It aims to reduce the entry price for electric vehicles while not making any compromise on range and performance.

As the Conservative party is officially talking over the Ontario government, they announced that they are officially shutting down the province’s generous electric vehicle rebate program effective immediately. (14 days ago..June 29, 2018)

Scrap Metal Needs Your Help!

Scrap metal may not be glamorous, but it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry.

If we actually recycled ‘ALL’ old phones instead of chucking them into the dustbin, our recycling percentage would go through the roof! We would be a better world if we stretch our efforts to ‘recycle properly’ instead of throwing the recycle items in the general trash. Cities should be more proactive, having disposable locations for say batteries -instead of driving a long distance to dispose of batteries. Other cost effective measures: For instance, the bin could send out a signal when this bin reaches a certain level of ‘fullness’. This way the driver does not have to come at a scheduled time to check the bin for dumping. A lot more of these ‘easy to access’ processes should be adopted by more cities. I need to see more bins!

“Recycling Rates of Metals: A Status Report,” says that recycling rates of metals are in many cases is discouragingly low. The report issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) states that fewer than one-third of 60 metals studied have an end-of-life recycling rate above 50 percent and 34 elements have a recycling rate of less than one percent. IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON
In Southern Ontario, I have seen a lot of bins overflowing. Coffee shops have recycle bins outside that are overflowing more times than I care to think. Is it up to me to call the city or the business and complain. Sometimes, it comes down to one person to do the right thing. Our ex-Mayor Hazel McCallion made notes where pot holes were peppered throughout the city of Mississauga. After she retired, a lot more potholes were left un-noticed. Yes it sometimes does take one person. Why not you?

Many people keep their old cars running a bit too long …..past their prime. As a result,  you just end up with spiraling mechanic’s bills to keep your car running a wee bit longer. I am very qualified to make that observation since I have been on the precipice of a dead car many times.  At some point you need to ‘scrap your car’.  After all, cars weren’t built to last forever.

The Model T (truck) was first sold in 1908. Although no verified hauling specifications are known, this one is pictured loaded with 8,000 pounds of hay. It was probably driving well below the Model Ts top speed of 40 mph.

Basically, the customer gives the tow truck driver the ownership papers in exchange for a predetermined cash amount.  A heavier car will draw more money for the customer. It’s all based on the weight of the car, where both parties agreed on a dollar figure for the value of the scrap metal for the car.  It’s not a lot of money. Quotes are based on the ton weight of scrap metal. Each car weight so much. The metal buyers decide on the prices for the processed scrap metal. The vehicles are usually crushed into large cubes of steel.

All the gas and fluids are drained. The car then goes down a conveyor belt to the furnace to melt the steel into manageable size for transportation.    The ownership goes to the government (stamped as a recycled car).
