First Day of Summer

A-H-H Yes. It’s the “official” first day of Summer!!! . . . . June 21, 2018 . . .

Does it feel like summer? Yes, we already had one heat wave. I would say that was that was the day summer kicked in. Lazy days, swimming and picnics!  University and college students are  trying to get the jump on summer jobs. Bees and wasps are searching for their summer home.

BEES A-BUZZIN
Summer also lets you know that the birds and the bees are out in full force. It is bee season for scrap cars too. If your old jalopy is sitting out in the hot sun, it becomes an incubator for wasps and bees. I have seen more wasps than bees nestling in for the summer in old cars.  Honey bees are a bit more high brow. Wasps or yellow jackets are feisty. They will sting so fast, it’s like Jumpin’ Jack Flash! That’s been my experience.

MY CAR STORY: I had to bring my mother’s car from Florida on a flatbed. It was a long drive . we parked the car at a friend’s place in Upper New York state for a few months. We decided to bring the car up to Canada one day since we needed to bring up a big concrete flag pole for the cottage;  another 400 miles away. We had our driving cut out for us. I was dropped off before the car was brought to a dealership and the flagpole continued on its way to cottage country. While checking the car, I opened the door on the driver’s side.  I had disturbed a swarm of yellow jackets. I slammed the car door and ran.  As we drove the flatbed, my cherry red Bonneville and flagpole to boot to the border crossing. It came time to inspect the car. We warned the agent at the Peace Bridge crossing that illegal yellow jackets were trying to cross the border.. The agent opened the door anyway. The yellow jackets did not seem to bother her as they swarmed out of the car. I guess they thought she was not worth of their stinger. Best guess! A few stragglers stayed in the car and made the trip to Canada.  The car went to a car dealership and I got myself a new car.  I suspect, the old heap went to the scrap yard. I did keep the Florida plates for sentimental reasons. It’s sad to see an old friend depart.  You just can’t hang on to the past.  An old car with many miles and just as many memories. New cars arrive in your life to begin a new journey, building new memories.

Summer Home For The Yellow Jackets (Social Wasps)

The best idea is to call a professional beekeeper to have them come and remove the swarm by finding and relocating the queen bee.

WARNING: Make sure you check your car for any critters, kittens or anything else that has invaded a car sitting around for a few months.
