Why do we call it the 25% solution?
New cars are produced using a minimum of 25% recycled steel. You have heard me talk about how recycled steel is equally as strong as new steel. This does not mean that we should close the “raw” steel fabrication plants. However. A lot more scrap metal processing plants are popping up around the country.

COAL BURNING PLANTS
Old coal-burning steel plants will not be revised. They are left to be demolished.
Here, in Canada, we closed a big coal-burning plant in 2005. The “Three Sisters” was built on the shores of Lake Ontario in 1961. At the time, it was the largest coal-fired power plant in the world. It has now taken the path of the dodo bird. In 2005, the announcement was made to topple the gigantic smokestacks. A coal-burning era had ended across the country. Bethlehem steel in Lakawanna, NY was another casualty. It was built at the turn of the century and enjoyed 80 years of employment for the locals.

RECYCLING PLANTS
New electric arc furnaces are more efficient way to fabricate steel bars, coils and sheets from Scrap metal: cars, refrigerators, ironing boards, etc. Essentially, Arc furnaces melt iron and do not use coal, instead they use a DC electrical current. With plenty of electricity, this furnace works best. I’d like to see solar-powered plants, if it is even possible. This video is really great! It is one of the top 10 videos about scrapping cars. It is funny and very well done!
