What Happens To Old Batteries?

SCRAP CAR BATTERIES💖
Today we have to repurpose two types of batteries:

(1) Electric Lithium Batteries
(2) Lead Acid Batteries

(1) REPURPOSING BATTERIES FROM ELECTRIC CARS
Yes! The batteries used to power electric cars (and hybrids, for that matter) can be recycled. In the beginning, the few electric cars that were on the road were powered by lead-acid batteries. The latest models use lithium-ion batteries, just like laptops and cell phones. The lithium batteries are lighter in weight and last longer than a lead-acid battery.
Lithium-ion battery-powered cars are becoming more popular in lieu of oil and gas potential shortages. The recycling centers for Lithium-ion batteries are still in their infancy. Let’s take a look at how to convert a lead acid battery to a lithium battery. Did you know it could be done and your car runs! Here’s a Honda Civic with a new lithium battery. Could it be true?
There are two methods to process lithium-ion batteries when they reach a recycling plant. If the battery is completely without a charge, they go to the shredder to sort out the copper and steel. If the batteries has a charge, they are then frozen in liquid nitrogen and then smashed to frozen bits (cool!). The liquid nitrogen is so cold, the batteries can’t react, so the smashing is safe. And, probably fun. Makes you think of Terminator 2 – when the new and improved terminator (bad guy)  got caught in liquid nitrogen broke apart and yes came back together again to cause more havoc!
(2) LEAD ACID BATTERIES
One of the first cars were steam-powered similar to trains. That idea was short-lived. The lead acid battery was invented in 1859 and used for turning on train lights and as a back-up battery. Early cars did not have batteries. They were started with a crank. The lead acid battery came in 1920, the same time as the electric (car) starter was invented. It wasn’t until 1970 that the sealed battery was used (It did not require filling). did you know that the most recycled product in the world–next to cars- are car batteries.

This video (below) really shows you how batteries are re-purposed.
