The Do’s and Don’t of Scrapping Your Car

My 13 year old car is sitting in the garage with a dead battery. What do I do? Do I sell is scrap it or give it away?

SELLING There are a lot of places in your area that will take your used vehicle. Since the internet went up, you can find even more. In Mississauga, you can go to autocatch.com/mississauga where they boast about having 21,000 used used cars for sale. You may be in that group too. It’s a buyers market. You can buy a 1999 Ferrari for a cool $78,000 with only 38,000 miles on it. Nice!!!. The Auto trader is a good place to advertise your car among 404,000 other vehicles; 40,000 available 50 km from my postal code in Mississauga. Trading in your old car when buying a new one is discouraged. The dealers know you just want to get rid of it and will low ball you at best.
SCRAPPING
Nowadays, you type in scrap my car in Google and a dozen scrap yards pop up. They promise to collect your vehicle within days and even offer you money for it. All car-scrap yards must have a license issued by the Environment Canada. The Environment Protection Agency ensures that scrapped vehicles do not harm the environment. All the batteries are removed, oils and gas is drained before scrapping and that they are recycled appropriately. I have heard stories when a vehicle is scrapped in a large yard that you may hear an explosion when the compacted hunk of metal goes through the smelting stage. Some gas had been left in the car. According the the plant supervisor, it is not dangerous. Safety measures are in place in case such mishaps occurs.
GIVE IT AWAY
Maybe you have a relative or a friend that would take this vehicle off your hands. Perhaps put a bit of money into it to fix it up. Some cars were looked after well and it’s good. Normally, cars that are 10 year old or so need to get all kinds of new parts. The wear and tear builds up as the mileage goes up.
