PREDICTIONS FOR 2018
Scrap metal prices should be good for 2018 and even on the rise. The demand for scrap metal and recycling cars will never take a backseat. Our economy is built to sustain the veracious consumer. They always need something. Cars is about the biggest turnover. If your car is driven everyday you need parts, oil changes and alas a new car every ten years. We commute to work at an alarming pace. Not too long ago, I was one of those cogs in the working world, oiling that machine we call life and happiness. Cars are clogging up our highways more and more each year. What’s the solution? Work from home. Not so easy to do. You still need to get around no matter what you do. Shopping, visiting friends and clients. Public transportation helps remove your car from the roads in congested cities. If you go into the suburbs, watch out. 3-4 cars may be occupying your driveway. No room in your garage. It’s filled with bicycles and storage overflow.
WHO NEEDS RECYCLED CARS?
Due to necessity, we need scrap cars. Mainly because we can not fill the land with piles of cars.
SCRAP METAL PRICES
According to Statista.com, It looks like Scrap Metal Prices “Worldwide” are around $197 U.S. dollars per metric ton.
In 2013 China was taking hold of the market in a big way. Here in Canada we experienced lower prices at that time. I can not show you charts because Canadian scrap metal and steel companies do not publish their forecasts online. I have attempted to find information from time to time. All I get are current prices per ton(from Goldman Sachs). It’s a bit bewildering that I always have to go to U.S. or China’s websites to glean information about world scrap metal prices. Rarely, I find Canadian scrap metal activity on a large-scale; very hard to find. Next, we will look at U.S. Scrap metal prices. Generally speaking, our results in Canada are close to US markets.
What’s in store for 2018?
Scrap metal prices increased about 8.5% by the end of December 2017. (Canada and the U.S.) All reports show scrap metal recovering from a deep sleep. The rise in scrap metal prices will be very conservative. Do not look for any great increases. We are lucky to stay in the game, considering China – always looming over our heads. The chart below shows China in “RED” and the rest of the world in “BLUE”.
Even though this chart only goes up to 2015, the next 3 years are not very different. Even though you will see a few ups and downs, expect a good, solid year in scrap metal for 2018.
