CARS became common place around 1920’s. When the cars completely broke down no one knew what to do with them. There were no recycling facilities back then. Small Junk yards started popping up in 1930 during the depression. You could buy a toaster for 5 cents or a fender or a rear view mirror for your car. Radios and heaters were added to cars in the 30’s. More junk….junk yards began stocking car parts as the demand grew. Some rednecks still go shopping at the junk yards even today. There was no stopping the assembly line for new cars. What have we done? The 50’s brought out the “Muscle Cars” and “Hot Rods”. A new breed of followers developed as “Car Junkies”. Nostalgia and motor heads keep these cars running, even today.
A whopping 97% of cars are recycled!
Take a look around you and you can see at least 2 cars in every driveway. What does that mean? An overwhelming stock pile of crushed metal and worn out tires are piled up. These ‘scrap cars’ are a valuable commodity when they are recycled reused and made into something new and useful. See those rubber welcome mats. They came from old rubber tires. Recycling cars is now big business. The latest buzz today is “up-cycling”. Sounds a bit better than re-cycling.
NEW STUFF: Many new products are being made from discarded vehicles. As more and more cars are invading our lives, we are running out of room on the planet to simply dump them on the surface of the earth. It has become more of a necessity to up-cycle old cars. As we find more uses for old cars, we begin to solve the problem of contaminating our earth’s surface.
TOO MANY SCRAP CARS
What are they doing with the old cars? It is a lengthy process. The mangled steel is shredded and turned out into into manageable cubes, ready to be sent out to plants that make steel girders, house frames and last but not least ~ more news cars.
