100% Recycled batteries makes new Bowling Balls

When your vehicles are compacted, sorted and trashed, many new products are manufactured. Can you guess how many new products are made from scrap cars? Let’s start with the car batteries. When the car or van or truck arrives at the scrap yard, the batteries are removed and sent to a specialized battery scrap plant. These lithium ion (wet cell) scrap car batteries are encased in plastic. That’s your only hint. (Plus the title of this blog is a giveaway) If you guessed bowling balls, you would have guessed right. Lawn bowling or lane bowling use the same recycled plastic from old batteries to create the plastic orbs.

Scrap Batteries ready to be shipped

Those hard core bowling balls are made out of plastic from the outer case of recycled car batteries. It is remarkable that 97% of scrap cars are recycled. The largest recycled item on the planet today. You can argue that plastic bottles are 100% recycled. Surprising to some people, the recycle plant does not get 100% of the bottles that are being tossed out. These water bottles find their way into landfills and waterways leaching toxins into the earth. Plastics have a 50 year decomposition rate. That means our grandchildren will reap the repercussions! Scrap batteries are shipped around the world to be recycled; from the outside hard plastic casing to the lead inside the batteries.

Bowling for Madeline

This is Madeline enjoying an afternoon of bowling with her friends. That is, bowling from recycled scrap batteries! Scrap cars contribute so much to improving our environment. The government has a watchful eye when it comes to recycling cars. The hazardous waste is their prime concern. Gone are the days when a big sledge hammer would crush the car into a manageable size and then left in landfills. Today, large hammerhead wheels crush the cars. And, we find new ways to scrap cars and recycle scrap cars.

First of all they CLUNK. When you turn the ignition on and it sounds like “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang“: that would be your first clue. Your second clue would be when people that are driving SMART cars are laughing at you. Don’t respond to their hand gestures. Make sure you don’t confuse the extreme amount of exhaust fumes for a rain cloud. Because it’s not going to rain. When you do break down on the road, let’s hope it is not on the highway. That is not a place you want to be stranded. When the light turns green make sure you don’t leave any part of the car behind.
The census is:
Your old heaps with be replaced by the “”NEW” higher mileage vehicles. This way the environment should benefit from less auto emissions.
Even though your financial situation doesn’t allow you to purchase a new car, the gas and repair costs tell you it’s time to get rid of your clunker. Please for you good health and safety, plan on getting a safe, environmentally friendly car. You will have less stress in your life and many other benefits.

The New OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) for Ontario’s Drive Clean TEST
Canadians were introduced to Drive Clean testing in 2001. Drive Clean revision landed on us in January, 2013 making it even harder to pass the test. The new rule: Under the new test, any vehicle with the “check engine” light on will fail. If your (MIL) engine warning light is on, look out. You need to see a mechanic before you can pass your Drive Clean Test. Each year, this adds millions of dollars to the Canadian Government coffers.

In its place will be an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) protocol, where a government-approved test unit plugs in to communicate directly with your vehicle’s on-board computer, explains Drive Clean expert Eli Melnick of Start Auto Electric in Toronto.
While driving, your vehicle’s computer performs a continuous series of self-tests of its emissions systems. If anything is amiss, the computer illuminates the “check engine” light. from wheels.ca

These new testing facilities have signed a seven year contract. I do not foresee any changes until this time has passed explains Drive Clean expert Eli Melnick of Start Auto Electric in Toronto.

What’s a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)?
Is the malfunction indicator malfunctioning? My son will slam on the horn on the steering wheel if someone wobbles over to his lane or cuts him off. Now the airbag MIL light is on. The car horn and the airbag are all in one. Why would they design it that way in the first place? If the airbag light is on or off, it will not interfere with driving or make a difference in your exhaust fumes by polluting the air in any way. The mechanic told me it was a malfunction in the wiring. Sometimes you only need new fuses to eliminate that neon yellow light. Not to worry, the airbag was fine. But, the light is still on!
“The check engine light is stupid” says Jalopnik. He really has something interesting to say. Read more

Ban the Check Engine light says Jalopnik

My friend had his break light on for 4 years and his car runs fine. No mechanical problems whatsoever. The electronic dashboards don’t always tell the truth. But, how do you get rid of that annoying light? My best advice to you is ask your mechanic. The new Drive Clean Rules state that the Engine MIL light must be off to determine that the vehicle is road worthy. These inspections have added to the expense of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Public. Does drive clean really means they are taking you to the cleaners?
ELECTRONIC WORLD With the Clean Air Test all 1987 and older vehicles are exempt. These vehicles were not computerized. I’m sure there are a few still on the road and the classics of course. The Drive Clean Program cost motorists more than a billion dollars over the past five years.
JANUARY 2013 DRIVE CLEAN TEST
MIL Engine Lights. This is what the MIL should look like in your vehicle.

Car Light indicators

Some other changes: a car 7 years old is now exempt. (Unless you are selling your car.) It used to be 5 years old. A bit less gouging of the tax payers’ dollars.
REDUCE ~ POLLUTION: REDUCE the pollution not REDUCE my bank account.

My sister goes to the cottage most weekends. even on this gloomy, damp weekend. It’s nice to sit by the fire and breathe in nature. Her gas cost $45.00 for the trip with a new 2012 LEXUS. It’s the sports utility version. This is with the AC cranked up all the way. They took Jim’s old van one weekend. The gas was $70.00. Jim’s old van had soft brakes too. He was used to it. I was a bit surprised when heard this story in the difference in a big SUV and Old Bessie. You really need to trade in the old heap. You are saving money in the long run, when you think about it. For some things, it is better to cut loose of a dying car.
I’ll do the numbers for you. Gas for cottage visits all summer would be about $840 for Old Bessie and for the Lexus is $540. There you have $300 saving right away. Not to mention a better emission system with less pollutants for our environment. I’m not saying you should go out and buy a Lexus. But think about where your dollars are going. Is it time to think about scrapping your vehicle?

“That is a good question”, said Professor Paul. Based on the numbers, tires should last 40,000 to 80,000 km (25,000 and 50,000 miles). The quality of the tire is a factor along with the care of the tires. If you want your tires to last as long as possible, make sure that you keep them properly inflated. Get one of those gadgets and check your tires at least once a month. If you need to fill the tires every month then you may want to check them every two weeks. Use your best judgment. An improperly filled tire causes stress on the tire and it will get hotter and start to break down. If your car is not balanced, the tire may wear on one side. You may need a new tie rod or other mechanical fixes to ensure balanced tires. Proper tire maintenance may prolong the life of your tire by 50%.
DRIVING HABITS
Another factor that wears down your tires faster are your driving habits. If you accelerate fast or stop quickly, your tires will start to show it. Your may be a careful driver. But, if you are driving stop and go in the city every day and for long distances, the tires lifespan shortens.
WHERE DO OLD TIRES GO?
A lot of the tires that are used and worn out go to the recycling plant for shredding. The result is called “crumb” rubber. In this video you will see the process of how this crumb is made at the recycling plant from start to finish. This application is for building roads.

DECLINE IN SCRAP METAL PRICES
Scrap car prices are predicted to fall slightly in June and most likely not recover in July, 2013. A sharp turnaround in pricing seems unlikely.
Over production of metals is a global concern. Some layoffs in this industry were reported in England. There is a decline in steel prices in China. Chinese mills look to restock at lower prices later in the year. This results in dragging down iron ore prices. In the US the steel pricing will be about $US110 to $US120 a tonne. Scrap metal will follow suit as they always have done in the past.-from agMetalminer.com.
There is a 22% drop for steel making raw material, down from the March quarter. So much comes down to China as the biggest buyer of raw materials.
A big change in India. An exporter of iron ore last year, India is importing 1 million tonnes each month for this fiscal year. According to reports, this year, India’s export growth was likely to be represented by a single digit, and may end up at 9 million tons compared to 26 million tons back in 2012 …article by Sohrab Darabshaw on May 28, 2013 agmetalminer.com

Not many of those old vans on the road today. You could put a stereo with speakers inside the van. Plush pile shag carpets covered the floors, walls and the roof of the van’s interior. A real play room for adults. With high gas prices and strict emissions tests these sunshine vans have gone the way of the dodo bird.
Here’s a trip down memory lane.

Note: They haven’t stopped building vans. Vans today–more accessories and gadgets and better gas mileage too.

Chunks of scrap roll along the feeder pipe to the shredding area. The twin rollers prevent clogging. Next, rapidly spinning hammers take over, powered by a high voltage electric motor that has a direct line to the city’s main grid for power. At the end of the line fist like chunks of metal are spewed out. Every hour, 450 cars or 350 tons of metal are processed at the LYNXS Shredder. It works much like a conventional shredder. The difference is that it is about the size of a Brontosaurus. Nothing is lost with the Lynx. All plastics, rubber, carpet and glass pieces are separated from the metal bits and sent off for separate recycling.
South East Asia has the highest demand for scrap; ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, copper and aluminum. About 60 percent of scrap metal will reach South East Asia. This dinosaur shredder exports 2.5 million tons of scrap every year.

The summer is nearly upon us. After the toasty long weekend we are experiencing cool nor’westerly winds. But soon there will be scorching hot summery days. Just yesterday, I opened the car door of a car I was picking up for scrap and sure enough a few wasps stormed out.

Give Bees a healthy home – not in your old car – Scrap your car today.

Needless to say when the snow has melted, and summer is looming ahead, we are able to see the old car sitting in the driveway or tucked in our garage. Summer brings all kinds of critters looking for their summer lodging. You can be sure you will find a bee’s nest or a wasp nest if you have an outdoor car parked for even a couple of days. That’s all it takes. Garage cars are safe. They are only invaded by rust and dust. We do wear our insect repellant in the summer, especially August when picking up scrap cars. Nothing gets you moving when you open the door of an old heap and see angry wasps heading your way.

Yellow jackets setting up their summer Home

I’m not allergic to bees or wasps. But, they do not discriminate on who gets their stinger. Luckily, I’m a salty dog and they are not too fond of me anymore. As a matter of fact, Bees seldom set up home in an old car. Bees are a bit more discriminating. After all they give us honey. Wasps, yellow jacket and hornets often find refuge in an abandoned or stationary vehicle. They are feisty old soldiers ready to protect their fiefdom. Have a sweet day and enjoy your summer adventures. And stay clear of angry wasps.
