SCRAP TRENDS summer 2013

Scrap metal predictors are telling us that it is going to be a long hot summer. Aluminum prices dropped 5% this week. It is significant since scrap cars carry about 5% aluminum:- the engine block and tire rims. Did you know that the steel industry is 9 times bigger than aluminum? blog-scrap-metal-chart However aluminum prices are always a lot higher than steel. Scrap steel demand has felt a slight drop. Since January, prices have fallen about 12 percent. This month: May 2013, you will see scrap metal prices drop slightly about 2%. If you have a vehicle you are thinking about scrapping, this would be the time to do it. Predictions are only good for 8 weeks. You can take a look at other aspects of the economy to make a “good” guess. I am going to go out on a limb and say that scrap metal prices will drop once more in June by 5% at most-10%.
PITTSBURG STEEL-ERS
steelersWhere better to look at scrap metal prices than in Pittsburg. The mecca of steel fabrication. Steel products also have not taken hold in the market place recently, reducing the value of scrap material. The football team -Pittsburg Steelers got the name from the largest old steel city in North America. When babies were born in Pittsburg, the boys got a pin with a football as a charm. You either played football or worked in the steel factory. Who better knows about the supply and demand of steel than in Pittsburg. Domestic fluctuations in stainless steel scrap are mirrored by foreign demand. In London, the scrap metal prices are more volatile. Some months scrap metals demand is nonexistent. European Market is looking for many alternatives for their declining economy.

SCRAP CAR PRICES MOVING UP!

WILL MARCH MARKET RETURN TO JANUARY SCRAP METAL PRICES?
march-scrapcars2013February Scrap metal prices dropped about 20% -30%, especially during the last two weeks of February. How do we determine scrap metal prices? Always look at the market expectations and how new construction and building demands is measured out. It really boils down to “best guess”. Prices are going to return to January levels.

The February slide was attributed to supplies tightening up. Maybe the scrap buyers were holding off to try and force scrap prices down in the beginning of the month. It’s a bit like chess. You move your men to force you opponent to move a certain way. Sometimes, they surprise you by not reacting in the way you had hoped. February markets were off an average $10-$15.
scrap-metal Here is the yellow cautionary flag that went up at the beginning of February. “The mills canceled my open orders the first week of February,” said one Midwest broker, “which told me the market was going down, whether I liked it or not.”
It is slow everywhere in North America as the scrap yards have inventory building up. They don’t want to sell low if their profit margins shrink. These yards are confident that scrap prices will go up in March. Scrap prices has gone up by $10, only for certain grades of scrap metal.

Scrap Metal Prices for 2013

Scrap Metal Forecast for January-February 2013
January 2013 did note bring the prices up as much as was expected. The good news is that scrap prices didn’t drop. We were anticipating Turkey to buy scrap. They turned to Europe for most of their scrap metal. U.S.Scrap prices dropped slightly to encourage the buyers. Then, back to the States as ships full of scrap metal left Boston harbor, headed for Turkey. Some scrap metal brokers feel that its a war out there right now. If countries don’t like the scrap prices, they may stall or delay their projects. Nothing is certain. However, there looks like a bit of a drop may be coming up in the near future. The scrap dealers call it ‘cabin fever’. Where nothing is moving quickly. You do as little as possible and make sure you get by on the bare essentials.
CABIN FEVER
It happens during the winter as the cold weather settles in. Especially in February. It looks like most of the world of ferrous scrap right now is suffering from cabin fever.

January 2013 Scrap Car Prices

future_scrap_pricesPredictions for scrap metal prices for January 2013. Predictions are all based on speculation. But a good guess rather than a bad guess is a good way to put it. Look at what the world’s doing and look in your own backyard. The other rule was as long “as all this remain equal” your prediction is true. If there was another Tsunami or a natural devastation, your prediction will go out the window. But, a good guess is what we are hoping to find.
January 2013 is a typical solid month. No major upsets in the horizon. The actual scrap car the consumer gets paid is less since the vehicle needs to be processed. Added cost for preparing the cars is factored into the price.

What is a scrap car worth?

Scrap Car Aluminum Rims

Aluminum Rims from scrap cars

The modern car is primarily made out of iron which is only worth about 18 cents a kilo. The consumer will get paid by the estimated weight of the scrap car. An average scrap car weighs 1 to 2 tons. Your engine and carburetor (and some rims) are made from aluminum. There is about 150 kilos of aluminum alloy in one car, selling at $1.25 per kilo. The battery and tires may fetch $5.00 each. You also need to factor in the cost of processing each car.

cash in your pocket

It begins when the scrap car has all the fluids removed. Fluids: oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, wiper fluid and radiator fluids are removed from the scrapped vehicle. When the consumer expects $500 or more for their vehicle, their expectations are too high….it is not practical. There is not a lot of money for the consumer when scrapping their vehicle. A whole car will get you around $240 -$300 per scrap car in Ontario (Jan.2013). Older, heavier vehicles will weigh in for more cash. Other provinces in Canada will vary in their pricing. Alberta for instance offers quite a bit less then Ontario for scrap cars province wide. If you are from Alberta, lets hear from you. Add your comments at the bottom of this blog. We like to know who’s out there reading our scrap car news. We often get questions about how we process the vehicles and changes in the scrap metal market pricing. I hope you find this information helpful.

Scrap Car PRICE TIPS

scrap car price may changes daily

SCRAP CAR price may change daily.

SCRAP CAR PRICE TIP: Although the price of scrap metal changes throughout the day, you should never wait weeks at a time before you check for scrap metals prices when you are looking to dispose of your scrap car, truck, or van. Some days are actually better to sell your scrap on than another day. As a rule, you should always check for updates every 2 days. It is a bit like a roller coaster. Take the price today, if you think it is a fair price or manageable. Carpe diem! Of course we all think we need more for the car. If you are getting around $300 for a heavy car take it -that’s about as good as it gets right now. The next day, the price may drop $20-$50.

Making a list

AND—CHECKING IT TWICE!
Santa’s making a list and so are you. Holiday shopping lists for gifts to celebrate the holiday season. It’s just around the corner. Let’s get busy and make our list. Don’t forget anyone. Mrs Claus gave me a few suggestions for heart warming gifts. 1) HOME-MADE: brownies for the staff and your co-workers. For the festive touch add red, white and green sprinkles on top. Banana bread, rum balls, holiday cookies. 2) SOMEONE ILL: – a heating pad, hot water bottle, soft blanket. lemon drops. 3) GIFTS IN A JAR with Recipes: Get some mason jars and add your favorite short bread dry ingredients and silver candy beads, red and green maraschino cherries on top with festive cookie cutters. HINT: Wrap the cookie dough around the cherry -then bake. (they supply the butter) 4) GO ORGANIC: Get the most healthy gingerbread cookie recipe. Double Ginger Cookies. Make them at home or fill a mason jar with ingredients. Don’t forget the red and green. I would add coloured coarse sugar as a topper; like they do it at Starbucks. I tried this recipe and it’s good organic-vegan style. You can add cranberries and nuts. 5) One more thing on your list: How about that old car? Don’t wait another year. We can help scrap it with free towing to the scrap yard!

Recycled products from scrap cars

It’s getting cold up here in Ontario: the leaves have all shed from the trees, the morning greets us with frost-covered windshields and we’ve finally turned on the furnace. As we hunker down for a long winter, let’s turn our attention Green Living products made from recycled metals and plastics. We are able to get new, very usable products from old car batteries and tires. Lots of trash can be recycled. Don’t forget, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Take a look at this home (townhouse/loft) in the urban streets of Chicago.

Trash to treasure: tossed-out steel doors, railings and structural elements were brought back to life through orange paint. Wood and glass doors and windows were also taken from discarded waste piles. The home itself reuses parts of the original foundation on the site.

Green Hair is a new twist to keeping it green?

IGNobel prize winner Johan Pettersson tells us all about it. In early October, 2012, the recipient if the IGNOBEL PRIZE in CHEMISTRY came from Sweden.

Johan Pettersson [SWEDEN and RWANDA]. for solving the puzzle of why, in certain houses in the town of Anderslöv, Sweden,
people’s hair turned green.

He DYED HIS BEARD GREEN for the ceremony! This man is DEDICATED.
The study and findings was located in the southern most tip of Sweden.
The engineer came to the conclusion that it was the copper pipes that were to blame, as they weren’t properly coated in the new houses.

Hot water being left in the pipes overnight caused the copper to seep into the water system, leaving the tap water with five times as much copper as usual.

As copper has a naturally green dying effect, any residents in new houses in the area who showered using the tap water found they suddenly had green hair.

“The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people’s interest in science, medicine, and technology.”
