Hot Scrap Cars: Tires and Steel
Have you ever wondered what they do with the scrap metal and tires from scrap cars, vans and trucks and how it impacts our world?
SCRAP TIRES: Scrap tires are sometimes used for fuel in factories the same as you would burn coal or wood. Tires are made from about 20% natural rubber
It would make sense to burn these oily tires. Third world countries rely on the shredded tires for their kilns and ovens, where ever they need flames. Roads and highways are made from scrap rubber or what they call rubber “crumb” mixed in the asphalt. These roads have fewer repairs and last longer than the old conventional roads. And of course you can make a swing or use the inner tire for a swimming raft. The toxins form the inner tube and even the swing tires are harmful. These playground items have gone the way of the dodo bird. Although, you will still see tires swings around. They did remove them from our nearby park about 8 years ago.
SCRAP METAL: Steel is the largest and most sought after scrap metal material.
Some scrap cars are crushed into large cubes for exporting and are smelted overseas (less expensive). Smelted scrap metal ingots promotes pollution even though steel smelting plants using raw materials give off more pollutants to our atmosphere. Pollution is not a primary concern for all countries. Bring commerce to a country helps feed and clothe their people. Steel girders in construction are made from recycled scrap metal. In some camps, they believe that recycled scrap metal is stronger than the initial raw material made into steel.Recycling one metric ton (1,000 kilograms) of steel saves 1.1 metric tons of iron ore, 630 kilograms of coal, and 55 kilograms of limestone. wikipedia
How about plastics? That other polluting toxic product we manufacture. Hyundai has a plastic prototype car made from recycled plastic water bottles, that rivals metal and fiberglass body cars.
